AQIM claims attack on Algerian gas plant

Al Qaeda’s North African branch has claimed a rocket attack on a gas plant in the southern Algerian desert near the town of In Salah. The rocket barrage, which was directed at a joint BP-Norwegian Statoil facility, somehow left the gas plant unharmed and no one was injured yesterday.

BP and Statoil announced Monday they are withdrawing all staff from two gas assets in Algeria - the In Salah and In Amenas facilities- following an attack by militants on Friday on the In Salah facility. Al-Qaeda's North African branch claimed responsibility for the assault.

The In Salah gas asset is operated by a joint venture of BP, Statoil, and Sonatrach. Located in Krechba, Algeria, it was hit by two apparently homemade mortars that were fired from outside the perimeter of the facility, according Bloomberg, citing a report from the Tout Sur L’Algerie website
