Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help with some info as one of my wifes dogs in Nonthaburi has bacterial Pneumonia, she has been taking to the pet hospital and I believe she is being ripped off regards cost as Ive seen somewhere that vet costs in Thailand shouldnt be extremely expensive. cost so far is...first visit 2 300 baht, second 1 200 baht, third 5 700 baht a and now its up to 35 000 baht and thats just 1 week of treatment

It's not dissimilar to the difference between a rural government hospital and a large Bangkok private hospital. Local vet with minimal equipment but okay for treating basic issues will not be expensive.

A large, modern clean pet hospital with plenty of staff, x-ray facilities, etc. etc. and the costs can soar. Six daystay and treatment for our cat recently (kidney, heart), and the bill was 36,000 baht... cad didn't make it sadly but we tried.

Sorry to hear about your cat, thanks for your info, sounds like its about the right cost she is getting charged.

If the animal has been diagnosed with "bacterial pneumonia" that suggests x-rays, laboratory investigation etc. If the cost of medication + the vets professional fee is added to the cost of the x-rays, tests etc. the costs would seem reasonable.

The only means of reducing such cost would be to find a single handed vet, working outside a "pet hospital" and accepting empirical* treatment

* Empirical = relying on experience alone when prescribing treatment.

Thanks very much for that info, much appreciated

Impossible to comment on the costs without knowing the breakdown: what tests, what exact medications correspond to those amounts.

Can certainly get treatment for less cost (and likely better quality) at a government university vetinary hospital but long waits (have to spend at least half a day on each visit) and not as convenient to where you live. Worth keeping in mind though if the dog doesn't seem to improve.

Vets and the attitude of many of them here is so hit and miss.....most of the ones I have dealt with are greedy and dishonest.
