Phuket etiquette course in wake of Chinese tourist prawn gorging

Not exactly on topic .... but I once spent a few weeks on a Chinese operated drilling rig and I have to say that watching the Chinese workers eating in the canteen was the most disgusing event I have ever seen offshore. Much like this video ... load plates up with everthing available and eat like a pig.

Went out to eat at a restaurant in Rawai, to my disbelief the chinese group at the next table made such a disgusting mess I wanted to walk out.

It wasn't enough that they were gorging like rampant animals even the leftovers were spread all over the table.

Didn't even have the decency to place their leftovers in the plates. Literally spread all over the table...

Felt bad for the local restaurant staff.

Too busy playing with their phones with greasy fingers to care about how this looked.

Only thing missing for them to do is get on their fours on the floor while doing this.

Are these the quality tourists that TAT were on about ?

Too right. Thailand should be reserved for the more civilized white people who travel extensively and know how to behave and not offend local customs.

This behaviour is something that no Europeans would do, let's ban all the Chinese because some of them don't behave like we want them to.

I'm guessing that the blaze of indignation was from Thai "netizens".

Do you not agree with them? I certainly do.

With over 1.35 billion of these charmers on their doorstep a few "tats and fats" are the least of their, or my, concerns.

I am not concerned by the fats and tats or the Chinese.

Every non Thai has the same right to enjoy Thailand as another.

I doubt all 1.35 billon will come to Thailand.

But if they did it would be a great boost to the prawn farming industry.

If they stopped coming Thais will lose money. The more Chinese that come the better for the Thai economy and the Thais in general. More VAT collected. Hotels and staff, tourist attractions and staff, prawns farmers and their workers and communities and just about every other type of farmer, bed linen factories (chonburi), taxis, tuk tusk, bus drivers, mechanics, it is endless.

I bet the prawn farmers are getting excited about this. Give the farangs their buckets of booze, give the Chinese all you can eat "Made in Thailand Prawn Nights". They will love it.

Everyone happy.

No need for concern.

The Thais are great at making everyone feel happy. If some tourists get too out of line, the Thais will help them with a bit of attitude adjustment. Just as it says in the OP.

They are great hosts these Thais. Very clever people.

Tourism just gets bigger and bigger here despite setbacks, tsunami, SARS, chicken flu, political fighting in the streets, a military takeover of the government, erawan shrine, financial crisis, Russian problems etc etc etc and all those "final nails in the tourist coffin" that you read about on thaivisa.

They always bounce back, bigger than before. People queueing up all around the world at airports right now. 24/7365.

India not far to the west, China not far to the north.

Half the worlds population. Growing middle class. It is gonna be huge mate. The prawn farmers are gonna love it.

I have to disagree. Have you been to the once interesting and beautiful tourist sites in Thailand? Kanchanaburi at the bridge of the River Kwai is no longer accessible due to throngs of noisy, pushy Chinese. Same goes for the Golden Triangle, Doi Suthep, Grand Palace and all the other famous attractions in Thailand. Many who used to come here enjoyed the quiet beaches which are now crowded with Chinese milling about fully dressed with umbrellas screaming at each other. When they come upon a 5-star hotel complex on the beach, they hop up into the grounds and start taking turns having their photos taken in the hotel beach chairs until they are chased away. They are noisy, rude and have no concern for others and none for the environment (where they go, garbage is strewn everywhere). Long term, this pack of locusts will have a totally negative affect on Thailand tourism. Its already ruined in my opinion. The only reason the "powers that be" are promoting this influx is because most of the run down hotels from the past tourism boom are owned by Chinese Thai politicians and business elite who never invested in their properties but can now fill them up with Chinese who dont care about quality.

Many street level Thais are losing money & going out of business due to the influx of the Chinese hordes with only a few big businesses making truckloads of money.

Thais are losing money because chinese tourists are coming?
How does that actually work?
Are the chinese stealing from these " street level Thais" ?
So the seven million Chinese tourists are taking money from Thai people and taking it back to China? That's amazing!

Check the concept of opportunity cost. You can lose money by getting more chinese tourists. I'm not saying it's the case but it could possibly be.

I suspect these are the Chinese equal of the redneck or in Aus the Bogan.

Minesites I have worked at in Aus have to have staff to dish out and guard the seafood or other treats as the less sophisticated will fill countless take away containers with prawns or other delicacies stow them in their room fridge then toss them out some time later.

I am of aware of the video. However, just because one group of tourists act like this, doesnt mean that all of them will, said Santi Pawai, director of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Phuket Office.

Every Mainland Chinese group of tourists certainly are and you and your fellow twerps know it. Vulgar little people with swine DNA.

Now we are gonna start Bogan bashing are we? We are all Bogans in Australia, some of us just have more money than others and cut of the mullet. There is no upper class in Oz.

COSL?

I've seen the same , and whilst offshore Egypt I was introduced to Ramadan feasting, which is also disturbing to watch

But on topic, it's good to see a planned response... And it will be even better to see it carried thru... But I fear that I might be deluding myself
