CDC president: Drafting constitution is like building new house

BANGKOK, 22 March 2016 (NNT) – Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) president Meechai Ruchupan said that the country’s problems and conflicts were caused by four factors, including injustice in society due to the government’s lack of care for the people, sustained corruption, indiscipline and lack of law enforcement.

The constitution must be written to solve these problems and to stimulate the public participation in politics by creating a new election mechanism which clearly defines qualifications and prohibitions, the CDC president said.

He said that it was difficult to say whether latest suggestions from the National Council for Peace and Order might cause discomfiture as though the panel was assigned to build a new house.

Why is he here? I am sure there are other places that already have the above...so he should go to his Nirvana... [/sarc]

Meechai omitted reoccuring coups as the fifth factor. Political conflicts and bad governments are not solved by coups but by people power and a non partisan courts. If Thailand still think that they are similar to some under developed African countries where coups are regular, then they truly deserve the current sorry state.

The way I would interpret it is that Meechai is addressing his remarks to the Junta. He is saying in effect, " I am trying to fix a few things here with this new Charter, and I'm not going to crap it up with NCPO suggestions at the last minute. We are building a new house, and NCPO requests for new features don't fit the design."

Imagine if you headed the CDC.

I would make sure my health insurance and life insurance were paid up.

This is a pretty good analysis in my opinion. And nothing in the new constitution is designed to effectively address any of these issues

Drafting constitution is like building new house ....

On an old foundation. The underlying root cause of failure for the last 20 constitutions and the present draft are never addressed.

The good news is that the Meechai 2016 draft constitution comes with a self-destruct button. wai2.gif

The "Deep State" will not be addressed, but their cover will be enhanced.

Note an English language translation of this draft is not yet available. Foreign criticism has been delayed.

I disagree, the deep state is becoming securely entrenched, and doesn't seem to care how obvious it is.
