Can a foreigner sponsor a burmese nanny?

Featured Replies

I'm sure this has been covered but I can't seem to find it - perhaps searching for the wrong terms. I'm wondering if a foreigner - with a valid work permit - can sponsor a burmese as a housekeeper/nanny - work permit/ID/Passport. I'm just curious as my friend's helper says her agent is telling her she has to have a thai national as an employer and sounds like he's charging her a lot of money every time she has to do anything. He seems rather shady.

Anyone know what the requirements are or where we could find further info?

You could hire her as migrant worker but I don't think nanny falls under that program. You could probable hire her as caregiver. house keeper and etc.

Wouldn't that come under the category of a job that a Thai could do?

Not under the the migrant worker program. You will find legal migrant workers doing all types of work..

A foreigner can do it. Not sure about all the the procedures but the same office you get work permits would be the first place to start the process.

You could easily get someone in Thailand. You dont say where you live but certainly in Bangkok there are a lot of people available. Why would you want to sponsor someone from outside the country? Just curious

Yes it would

I – or rather we, as my lovely girlfriend arranged it – had a Lao nanny/maid/au-pair for about six year. She had a Work Permit under the migrant worker conditions (for citizens from Burma, Cambodia and Lao), each permit/period lasted for two years and the only demand after permit were given was, that she did 90 days address reports at local Immigration and applied for re-entry permit, if going home on holiday.
I'm not sure if the wording "house keeper" or just "maid" was used when applying for WP – many hotels has Burmese room maids – we used an agent suggested by the Amphor to sort out all paperwork and arrange everything for the application for our Lao-maid, herunder taking her to health-check and whatever else needed; costs a little bit extra, but think worth the money to make it all going smooth.
Some employers deducts the WP-costs in the migrant workers salary (seems like the norm, rather than exception), but we just paid it all; over a 2-year the cost was about 400 baht a month.

Edit: You need to pay tax of the full salary, about 1 percent – and salary shall of course follow the Thai minimum.
