HM the King endorses charter amendments

BANGKOK, 23 March 2016 (NNT) - His Majesty the King has recently endorsed amendments to the 2014 interim constitution, which allow the Election Commission (EC) to hold a public referendum.

The amendments consist of changes to Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4. Following the royal endorsement, the term ‘interim constitution’ is now officially recognized and used in the interim charter.

In addition, the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) is required under the interim charter to inform the Cabinet and the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) once the draft charter is complete.

The CDC is also obligated to produce an abridged version of the draft charter for public viewers. This version must be submitted to the EC for final revision. Once approved, it will be published and distributed to the Thai people by the election body.

The EC has also been empowered to organize the public referendum on the draft constitution and announce the results accordingly. The independent election body is also required to specify the criteria of eligible voters, as well as how votes are counted.
