Despite a decline in the amount of exports, income from the fisheries sector rose almost 30 percent last year compared with 2014. Fresh fish exports from Cambodia totalled 10,500 tons last year, down 800 tons on the year before, according to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Exports of processed products were 5,500 tons, down 700 tons on the previous year.

However, income collected was 4.15 billion riel (approximately $1.03 million) in 2015, compared with 3.55 billion riel (approximately $888,570) in 2014, an increase of 29.8 percent, according to the report. Shetty Seethara Thombathu, the chief technical advisor at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), told Khmer Times that most fish processors and exporters are small- and medium-scale enterprises whose owners often have limited knowledge about export procedures and the requirements of importing countries.
