CHONBURI:-- A 200,000 baht reward has been posted for an armed robber that stole more than 5 million baht from employees loading an ATM in downtown Chonburi at the weekend.

Police have confirmed that the man they are after is Charoen Thepwong, 50, wanted in connection with a string of armed robberies, one in the very same area some two years before. The man is believed to hail from the Chonburi area and is also wanted in connection with a killing in the area.

The man calmly walked up to employees loading an SCB teller machine outside a Lotus Express store and, brandishing a gun, ordered them to hand over money bags containing 1000 and 500 baht notes.

He then cooly returned to his motorbike, loaded a pannier and drove off in the direction of Bang Saen.

Some eyewitnesses at the time even thought it was a training exercise.

The reward is being offered by Siam Commercial Bank for information leading to the arrest of the robber.

Police said CCTV in the area confirmed the wanted man is indeed Charoen Thepwong who is considered armed and dangerous.

Is this the same robbery that was reported yesterday and the amount taken was reported as 10 million in 5 bags? The man must be living in hi style if he has been getting similar amounts in earlier armed thefts. Also wanted for murder and it appears he has been operating in the same area for several years. Sounds like he has a very well paying profession as his source of income.

Being armed, the BIB are probably not in a hurry to encounter him, and probably have no idea how to even start in a search for him. I have often wondered how these people know the route of the money truck and which ones are transporting the cash in bags and not in replacement containers that are just traded out for a container in the atm. I am sure no Thai would be involved in passing on this info, for free.

I always thought the machines were loaded using some secure cartridge device and the employees never handled cash. So they are actually filled up by hand like a candy machine?

From what I have seen, the cash is already loaded into drawers according to denomination. The drawers are loaded into a safe under the ATM machine. The drawers offer no security whatsoever.

Aww, everyone is so hard on the police. It's a tough job, especially in a country with relatively little violent crime, and that guy is violent. Maybe they should be like the ones everyone complains about back home, where they are accused of shooting kids of a different race and asking questions later. Maybe you all could recommend a TV thread to them where they can consult you before making a move to be sure it's TV approved.
