Cabinet passes water-saving measures for Songkran

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016 (NNT) – The Cabinet has endorsed measures for conserving water during the upcoming Songkran Festival as proposed by the Ministry of Culture.

Following the Cabinet meeting, Culture Minister Weera Rojpotchanarat made known that approval was granted to his ministry’s water conservation guidelines and measures to be implemented during this year’s Songkran Festival. Due to the ongoing drought crisis, he said it is crucial for Thailand to carefully manage water so as to spare enough for public consumption.

As part of the approved measures, the Culture Ministry will join forces with other related bodies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, to campaign for public awareness of the importance of water.

The officials involved are to provide people with suggestions on how to celebrate the Thai New Year in a traditional way without wasting a large amount of water. Revelers will be asked to refrain from excessive water splashing while the supply of tap water to celebration sites will be restricted to certain hours.

"As part of the approved measures, the Culture Ministry will join forces with other related bodies..."

Because the government has such a stellar history of interdepartmental cooperation. Don't be surprised if TAT starts promoting "Thai Desert Tours" in the near future.

"Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, to campaign for public awareness of the importance of water" - These are the very people who need to learn this not the population, as stated previously it is about time the government took the initiative and show by example e.g. reduce water supply through the day or forbid throwing of water except on each districts allocated day for celebration.

I bet if any government official is still in Thailand ( not on holiday in Japan) during Songkran; and goes to Nana or Soi Cowboy, they will be

soaked with ice water. Nothing stops Thai's from having fun. Rock on Thailand, Wet N Wild.

Wow, action! - maybe - next they will be limiting all the Police, Military & Hi-So owned golf courses from watering, they doubtless use far more water in a day than is thrown around over the Songkran period.

OK. What exactly are these measures? What celebration sites will have water supply restricted and how will this be done? Who's doing this restrictions across the country? ..... Bunch of BS!

Reducing Chiang Mai's official three days (actually a week or more) of fun to one would help. Fine folk who throw water outside designated day.

totally agree ONE day of stupidity is enough

And Pattaya's nine days into one, please?

Do people actually realise that Songkran is a 3 day festival, not 1 day? 13 - 15 April, traditional dates.

I agree cutting down places like Pattaya with the ridiculous 8 - 10 day party is a good idea, drives me nuts.

Anyhow the amount of water wasted at Songkran is negligible compared to agri-business use etc.

It is just an easy target for everyone as it is literally in your face.

A waste of time passing any resolution only for the relevant department to seriously think that 'asking' will achieve the required result. If you have the tools, use them. But don't rely on the Thais to take any notice of your requesting them to save water. They won't.

...". the supply of tap water to celebration sites will be restricted to certain hours".

Pretty clear what the strategy is going to be then.......simply turn off the taps.

... Which taps, where? The whole city? Will hotels and restaurants be caught up in this tip-off action?
