Now motorcyclists are banned from using flyovers, tunnels for crossing

I really have difficulties understanding the Thai traffic regulation's fascination with banning motorcycles from urban bridges and tunnels.

There so much other more effective things they could do to improve road safety.

Future announcement,from the Thailand government department for city,town and country roads.

Due to the excessive accidents on our country's roads being caused by Chinese tourists failing to understand our traffic directions,we have decided,after many meetings to reach a happy medium which will prevent future traffic oriented death's.

As we are aware that Main land China drives on the right,we have made the following changes.

As of Monday the 3rd of April 2016,all lorry's,trucks,Song teaw's and all other heavy vehicles,will drive on the right hand side of the roads.

Should this experiment prove successful,from Tuesday the 4th of April 2016,all other traffic will follow suit.

That's 9 minutes in 39 degree celcius in full sun/smog/smoke If you weared a white shirt it would be grey allready.

Simple Thai thinking. If you have a car you might have some money and be important. If you ride a cycle your poor and don't matter. Same thinking that places the same restrictions on both a 120cc and 1200cc motorcycle. Don't ask why? Its Thailand.

That tunnel is OK, there are no signs saying no motorbikes, and never seen cops manning that. However, the bridges before and after, you aren't allowed to go on and there are big signs for that.

But also, the first flyover from Din Daeng that crosses Ratchada and runs onto Rama 9, there are no 'no motorbikes' signs for that, and I use it everyday, all times of the day, never seen cops on it. Next fly over, from Rama 9 that branches off to Ramkampheng, that you definitely can't go on, have seen cops manning that before.

I ride through it and over it everyday, morning, afternoon and evenings - never had a ticket sent to my home - there are no signs banning motorbikes from that tunnel or the first flyover over Ratchada

maybe if the those on bikes that weave in and out of the cars and overtake on the inside of a car obeyed the rules it might make a difference too. Big bikes should be fine but these scooters/small bikes with multiple people on them and only go slow should be restricted. The amount of times I have been caught behind these idiots going not much faster than walking pace but sitting in the middle of the lane is a joke, they do need to be kept away from flowing traffic so that it does flow and not back up. Maybe also if the police were at the start of these sections the riders wouldnt go on them or better yet set minimum speeds for bikes/cars and minimum sized engines for bikes. The bigger bikes arent the problem as they move with the flow, its the smaller ones that need to be removed.

On the mainroads where 90 is the max. speed there are plenty of cars who drive 50, and they even brake while going downhill on a flyover. That really aggravates me and mostly they are old lady's or girls on the phone. Also many of them just stay on the middle lane and hold up everybody.

BKK traffic is just a big disaster, a totall mess ,and the bikers are the most vulnerable ones. It's really undoable to keep left all the time. Also many cars just drive on the most left bikerslane and they never use their indicators when they want to turn left.

BKK has the worst and most selfish drivers i've ever seen on the world. I don't want to drive a car here because i can't stand so much stupidity which eats my time.

And cardrivers feel much superior above motobikedrivers, wether you are farang or not. The only time they show respect for bikers is when they are in a group of big bikes with motocy-gang vests. Then nobody dares to come near them. I guess that's the reason why many motocy taxi's carry weapons, don't mess with them or you'll regret it.

you seem to be making it a us vs them scenerio, "no one dares come near us then", what a load of sh*t, think you have your hand on you know what a bit too much. Everyone should obey the rules whether they are on a bike or in a car, I ride/drive both and simply follow the laws, if everyone did this there wouldnt be half the accidents and deaths but many bike riders seem to think that everyone has to let them do as they please, thing is it is usually the scooters and small bikes that do it, bigger bike riders just follow the road rule in most cases and cause no problems. When you have idiot bike riders weaving in and out of cars and cutting them off, doing u turns in front of them while they are moving, not giving way etc they are asking to be run over, its a wonder more are not killed. Then you get the idiots that use their phones while moving in both cars and bikes which doesnt help, add this to the lack of respect for other road users by both cars/bikes again as well and its mayhem. Yes there are idiot drivers but there are a lot more idiot riders that simply dont accept that they do not have the right to do as they please and will always come off second best if they take on cars and trucks, its just a matter of size vs ego.

i tot motorcycles have been banned from using bridges n tunnels since like so long ago? my Thai friend has told me that since 6-7 years ago. And its only effective since what recently??? Anyways its not just banning that makes a road much safer. Its education of good traffic behaviour and i think Thailand still has a long way to go on this.

Right - I used to ride big bikes here 20 years ago, and bikes weren't allowed to use flyovers then either. Ditto for riding in any lane other then the left hand one, behind all the buses and trucks.

Add to this the prohibition on using expressways, and there really is no point in owning a bike here.

Better suggestion: make it illegal for scooters to pass cars between lanes. Fine: 5M baht, or just make it legal for car drivers to drive over them.

I'm not a member of any motocyclegang but sometimes i see them riding on the fast lanes of the road in a group and nobody dares to come near them, cuts them off of dares to come inbetween the group. They are like thai hells angels i guess, don't know what clubs they are.

Also i see motocycle groups who rent the police to escort them through traffic, with blue lights and sirenes.Last week about 50 ducati's with police escort who drove inbetween all congested cars.

So if you pay the police they even escort you.

Well 2 weeks ago i saw the Tourist police escorting 3 blue coaches on the highway from pattaya, and they drove 130 all the time. The speed limit is much lower so that's the problem.

Also those buses are not built for high speeds i guess, in Europe the max. speed for them is 80-90. You can't make me belief thai buses are better then ours.

But i don't understand why 50 ducati's need police-escort with sirenes. They make enough noise allready and can just drive between the cars like they always do.

The point is that the police should give good examples and obey the trafficrules. And ONLY the police/ambulance/firebrigade should be allowed to carry blue alarmlights, in Thailand everybody has them, last night i even saw a motocyle who was racing had a blue flashlight on his back...nope he wasn't police, he even didn't wear a helmet. I don't even look at blue flashing lights anymore. Even the police sometimes use them for fun.

But Thailand is sooo far from western trafficrules and it's all because of the lack of police on the roads and now they blame the motocycles for the accidents.
