Wild weather took two lives in the Kingdom over the weekend, including a 13-year-old boy who was killed by lightning on Saturday while shepherding a cow through a rice field in Pailin’s Sala Krao district, according to police.

Sala Krao district deputy police chief Ry Dara said: “The boy was shepherding the cow in the rice field when the lightning hit him. Before the lightning struck, the sky became dark and it was about to rain.”

He added that Saturday’s fatality was the second lightning death in the district this year and urged residents to stay indoors when a storm is approaching.

On the same day during a separate storm in Battambang’s Koas Kralor district, an elderly woman was crushed beneath her wooden home after one of its columns collapsed. At the time, Chhoun Nath was trying to cover sacks of rice with a tarp to protect them from the elements.
