Now be nice everyone,

I have lost an important word ducument, clumsy I know.

Now if I use Restore to go back to a time when I know I had it, will I then be able to come back to the present. (Its been seven days and I have done lot of work since then that I do not want to lose either).

Just want someone to hold my hand and tell me it will be alright :o

hi'

my 2B in here ... only 2 baths na kap :D

well, system restore is here to restore the system in a point known as working one.

if you never delete any restore points, you should be able to go back to your desired date,

once you get your file back, go ahead to the latest date.

so in order ... :

create a good restore point (well defraged and so on ..)

go back to the date you have chosen before ( the one with your file there)

once, you're in, save it in another partition, like the D:\ one :o

then restore the system in your latest "good restore point" you've just made.

although, I'm not sure 100% that it works, coz I don't use SR ...

but it seems to me that it's the only solution ...

try it ...no big risk.

the most important is that you have a clean restore point where to go back in case of problem.

someone else that use this SR can help more precisely? :D

did you try with a software to retrieve your file? (assuming that you hve such program)

profram like 'unerase', or 'goback' or 'easy recovery' ...

they had to be istalled already.

good luck

francois

ps; and from now on ... save your documents in a safe place somewhere else that the C:\ partition ...(my docs) ... anywhere but not on this one :D

Once you go back to your restore point you lose your one in the future so to speak, at least I think so, remember trying the same thing once.

Could allways do a test run and try it by putting the points a few minutes apart.

I normall put restore points in before I add a program or make any major changes.

my 5 satangs worth anyway. :o

They call it a System restore because that's exactly what it does. It has no effect whatsoever on data (pictures, wordfiles, etc...).

The only thing you can lose are things you changed on the system after the date of the restore point you choose. This means installed programs, drivers from newly installed hardware, etc. If you had installed new software, you'll see the files are still around, only Windows won't know about it because the registry will be restored to the state it was in before the program was installed!!

No luck here in restoring files inadvertadly deleted...

Thanks guys,

I had tried with a prog called 'restoration' but without any luck.

I 'lost' me word doc out of my docs after loading a bunch of security updates but did not notice it immediatly.

monty, from what your saying it would seem I just have to sit and cry, as going back to a retore point only resets the system progs without affecting files/docs?

Am sure you know this but just in case the recycle bin on XP does not immediately delete items so if it went there, and you have not deleted them, right click and select 'explore' and you might get lucky. I would also check all documents on your computer to see if by chance it got mis-named or filed.

Afraid so ukdog....

When a file gets deleted first it goes to to your recycle bin. If it's not there anymore it means that Windows made the space on your hard drive available again for other files to be written on. If this has happened your data is lost forever. It is however possible that that particular place on your harddisk has not been written over since the file got deleted. In that case it would be possible to recover the file with specialised software. One such program you can find on following link:

http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm

It is however not freeware. A search on the net will probably reveal much more data recovery programs...

Lopburi, thanks for the suggestions have been there, without any luck.

Monty I went to spinrite but on their purchase page they say that it will only work with Windows up 2 Millinium. :o

I will do as you suggest and search for an alternative.

Cheers,
