Public health ministry launches road safety measures for Songkran long holiday

BANGKOK, 8 April 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health supports the setting up of checkpoints in community areas in an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities during the Songkran festival neat week.

Minister of Public Health M.D. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn and representatives of relevant units on Thursday attended a meeting on the ministry’s measures for Songkran this year.

The minister said the measures were aimed at preventing motorists from driving under the influence, driving when they were getting sleepy and speeding. M.D. Piyasakol urged the public to call Hotline 1669 in case of emergency or download the application “EMS 1669.”

The ministry is also campaigning for seat belt and helmet wearing.

M.D. Piyasakol said the ministry would support 578 checkpoints in communities nationwide. The checkpoints will examine and warn the motorists who have risk behaviors for road accidents.

The minister urged the public to contact the authorities if they saw the sale of alcoholic beverages in the places where it was forbidden or alcohol sale to minors.

these are the things that should be done 24/7 365 days a year not just the big holidays which does very little anyway .

How about the police launching year round continuous effective law enforcement to stop the habitual bad habits that the drivers have because of the lax laws. What are the health ministry going to do, take their temperature?

This reads as a contradiction to me. When you drive about 100km/h and all of a sudden you have to go full in the breaks to come to a complete stop because some police officers have created a checkpoint without any warning signs (or you only see the signs after being in the traffic jam for 5 minutes). Next whoever passes the checkpoint needs to speed up to 120-150km/h to make up for the lost time.

Maybe they should invest in some speed cameras instead. I am willing to give them a few for free if I can get 10% of the proceeds.

Thank you Mr. Health Minister. Maybe while your at it you could address the burning situation here in Chiang Mai. I cannot open the condo windows for fresh air it is so bad. What did you say? Oh your going to be selling canned fresh air and I can buy some in my local supermarket or 7/11. Your importing it from China and it should be here shortly. Great.

This is easy. Make the cops do their job for once. They only do it when they are told to. They should be doing it all the time. But they drive with their eyes closed so they do not see anything.
