Meechai: Additional question will not confuse the public

BANGKOK, 11 April 2016 (NNT) – The chairperson of the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) has given a strong assurance that the public will not be confused by the additional question to be attached with the public referendum on the permanent constitution.

CDC chairperson Meechai Ruchuphan said he was confident that the additional question which has recently been approved by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will not confuse members of the public once they go to the polls.

Mr Meechai declined to give any comments on criticism that allowing appointed senators to select prime minister would lead to political crisis in the future.

He said the government does not forbid the people or political parties to voice their thoughts on the draft charter, but only wants all sides to give constructive comments that will actually help the country move forward. He also warned ill-intended people not to attempt any kind of distortion especially on the permanent charter.

"ill intended " surely you mean confused, not understanding,

"constructive comments" (appointed senators select the PM), surely it would be the whole elected party.

the guy who sells brown paper from the stationery shop is in for further good living.

What an utter ridiculous statement to make.

We will not forbid you to voice your thoughts on the draft charter, but only if they are the same thoughts as ours, is basically what he's saying.

I actually feel sorry for Meechai.

He may more singularly responsible for the current mess, and the deaths of so many Thais, than any other individual. And he remains clueless. Perhaps his advanced age has caused his "forgetfulness"?

This is his fourth constitution, and it is almost the same as his 1991 effort. Obviously that didn't go down well.

This draft charter is DOA, stick a fork in it.

I agree with you. Meechai, just says and does as he is told. He is the same as Baghdad Bob, the media guy during the Iraq War. When the Americans were closing in on them, and were at the city gates, he would say. " We have them( Americans) just where we want them. They have fallen into our trap. We will destroy them. " Next day, the city fell. And they all ran away.

He is only told what to say. Nothing more

We all know the junta has no ill-intended agendas. They just want control everything.

precisely.

That's obvious to all observers ... even the international news is starting to stop the parroting of a "roadmap to democracy"

It will prove to be irrelevant as to whether the additional question confuses members of the public (aka "citizens"?).

If confused, people will vote against the draft charter as a precaution to misinterpretation.

If not confused, a majority will still vote against the draft charter regardless of the queston.

Why not leave the question out until after the referendum? wai2.gif

noticed a complete blackout of "April 10th" news.

I mean Meechai is a riveting, complexed person and everyone wants to follow every word he utters, still ... coffee1.gif

Because they know they are illegitimate, and they are seeking some sort of validation. This is a trait of very bad governments everywhere.

The media is on the ropes. It didn't take too much intimidation.

More and more, the argle bargle from NNT is the message.

Well I would be confused and I studied law and practiced it for over 30 years.

The Constitution and the additional question contradict each other. So what happens if both get a majority of YES?

No qualified majority has ever been suggested for either vote.
