PATTAYA: In the early hours of Saturday 16th April morning, Pattaya police raided two Arabian bars in soi 16 after receiving information that the venues were selling shisha to tourists during the Songkran festival.

District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta instructed Junior Lieutenant Porasit Chitramwong and his team to raid the Gamra Restaurant and Abu Abdulah Bar located within walking distance of each other.

The team went to the Gamra Restaurant first which is a 5 floor building. The ground floor sells kebabs and drinks but on the second floor, police found more than 20 foreigners relaxing and smoking Shisha.

Pattaya police seized more than 50 Shisha smoking pipes and 4kgs of fruit flavoured Shisha tobacco. Police arrested the bar manager, Miss Jarunee Sunglah, 33, and a Syrian employee. The owner of the restaurant is thought to be of Egyptian nationality.

The second venue, Abu Abdulah Bar was run by a Palestinian man and when the police entered the bar, he panicked and ran away. They chased him for approximately 1km before arresting him and he confessed that he only ran because he had been working without a work permit.

Wow, I did not even know it was illegal. Was everywhere and so popular last time I was there, and never knew anything was wrong with it (on par with smoking I suppose).

From what I read, it was banned because the general was concerned about youngsters. Could they not simply put an age limit on it? And is this worse than drinking? I'd rather see a ban on alcohol (since, I don't drink :) )

The law is the same as England. No smoking shisha in public places. Same for cigars, cigarettes , pipes etc. Shisha is filth.one session is equal to 20 Marlborough . It stinks. It's dreadful that this has spread to Thailand. I applaud the police for their actions. If you want to smoke shisha you can smoke at home. So it is not illegal as such.

If anyone wants to practice this digusting smelling pastime - they should do it in their own stinking craphole country.

People talking about Thainess have got it wrong the Thais are correct this "ethnic" issue has nothing to do with this country.

I believe Cambodia beat the Thais to banning it first.

Banning Shisha makes no sense unless it's to destroy a certain demographic of tourists!

I hate the stink of the stuff. It is impossible to enjoy a meal once a bunch of ar5eholes have lit once of these devices.

Healthwise it is considered worse than cigarettes.

It was / is popular with the younger Thais believe it or not. A lot of Thai bars with Thai customers especially in Bangkok and pattaya were supplying it until the ban.

I have tried it, but it does nothing for you, so pretty pointless IMO, but I don't worry what other people do as long as they are not rude or hurting other people.

It wasn't a law brought in to stop people from "a stinking craphole country" from visiting Thailand.

Live and let live.

How petty. Is there not an import tax ? This is so stupid.

There is import tax but it was all being avoided and nobody was paying for the licences to use it. They'll work it out amongst themselves.
