Alleged Drug Dealers, Brit and American and Khmer, Rat on Each Other

Khmer Times/Buth Reaksmey Kongkea

A group of alleged drug dealers, including an elderly British national, his Khmer girlfriend, a Cambodian-American and a DJ, were tried by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday over allegations of drug trafficking committed last year.

Presiding judge Ly Sok Leng said the four suspects, 70-year-old Peter Richard Gold, his girlfriend Sim Lin, 31, 40-year-old Em Seng and Sophorn Horl, also known as DJ Soup, who is best known in Cambodia as the former presenter of a popular radio entertainment program on TV3, were charged with various crimes including “drug use, drug trafficking, and committing a felony after sentencing for a misdemeanor.”

Judge Leng added that Mr. Seng had spent 18-months in prison for illegal weapon use and was released in 2013, while Mr. Horl was now serving a 12-year prison sentence for drug related offences in 2011. Deputy Anti-Drug Unit Police Chief Lieutenant Colonel Toek Sony said the four were arrested in various locations in Phnom Penh’s Khan Daun Penh district on February 10 and 11 last year.

He added that police spent weeks investigating their activities before making the arrests, with undercover police successfully buying drugs from Mr. Gold. Mr. Gold and his girlfriend were arrested in Daun Penh district at about 5:30 pm on February 10. “Police have known their identities and whereabouts after our undercover police contacted Mr. Gold and his Cambodian girlfriend and bought drugs directly from them at their rental house near the Sorya Mall,” he said.

The same Peter Gold who ripped off a few people in Pattaya! Nice to see he'll get some jail time!

He proberly will not see a day out of prison again. And if it is the same Peter Gold from Pattaya I hope that he becomes somebody's girl friend.

Living in London during the 70's and 80's drug years (it was mainly speed, downers LSD and puff then)We knew most of the drug dealers and their sellers. They were regulars, always, in the same clubs and pubs. There was a select group for every area.We knew them all by first name terms.Their social ranking was almost the same as film stars. They would have the best looking bird's and car's,etc.I even remember how impressed we all were when one of them bought his old mum a house, getting her out of the council flat that she had lived in for years.Silwood estate Bermondsey,if any one knows it)

They all had that attitude 'we are the chaps,we are the firm. You don't mess with us' kind of thing. There were different laws then, about possession, internal possession, supplying and distributing.Even the cops were involved, giving protection and even telling the West End clubs that they were about to be raided and when. The disc jockeys would warn us about' when not to buy' nights.

My point is,that times were cushti and every body wanted to be a drug dealer because of the kudos and status it gave.

And all these firms were the same,'catch us if you can,we wont do any time,if we do,we can do it standing on our heads'

But then the law's changed over night. A lot of 'firms' were turned over, gaff's were spun and the 'sus' laws came out. They were being handed down long stretches by the boat load.

Now, these so called 'hard men' started grassing each other up wholesale, like there was no tomorrow, when a bit of remand came with a 5 t0 7 at the end of it ,they couldn't rat on each other quick enough.

So it would seem today. The principle is the same, but these nick's in SE Asia aint HMP,where you can meet old friends and continue the game inside. These boys start getting brown undies when they realise whats in front of them.

So the ratting game starts very quickly and involves every body.

If you play the game over here, its like 20 years of pure hell. You will wish each day was your last.

When it comes to drug's your 'friends' are very short term.
