Best internet for traveller on visit to Phuket and Khao Lak

Featured Replies

I'm soon doing a 3 week visit to Phuket and Khao Lak, and need reasonable internet to keep in contact with business back home, and maybe some Skype phone calls.

Can some caring posters give me some recommendations for one or 2 products with reasonable service. (e.g. SIM card for my phone with data, and allowing tethering for my laptop to access the internet)

I don't need huge quantities of data, but it needs to be reasonable quick, and I need coverage in the main areas of Khao Lak (e.g. Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak) besides Phuket.

p.s. I did search for this stuff through the archives, but got nowhere.

Best wishes

N

I've been down that road many times and have spent a lot of

money and a lot of frustration on wi-fi.

Now that i'm older and wiser i chose to stay in hotels with

good wi-fi, i usually get a room next to the router for the

best signal, i wouldn't waste my time on a usb-wifi-dongle

i've had bad issues with them.

Just take one of each network's SIM. They are only around 49 baht each. Then you can test the service when you land there and buy an extended package on the best.

Just buy a bunch of different company sims like Jiu Jitsu said just remember to bring your passport with you to buy them as you will need it to register them.

In my experience of trawling around that area, from Phuket up to Takua Pa I always had the best coverage with AIS.

But it's been a few years since I've been there so that's not necessarily the case now.

They do a variety of packages, the one I normally use I think is Bt799 for 12Gb or something, but a visit to an AIS shop will sort you out. There's in at Swampy arrivals.

I dread having to go to AIS (or similar offices in Pattata). The expression of excruciating pain that comes on their faces when one asks them a simple question is not worth it. It's like..."why are you hurting my brain asking me questions, do you think I have nothing to do except be here to help you"?

Thanks Chicog.

I'll be flying into Phuket Airport - any AIS shop there?

I suppose such shops are easy to find in Phuket.

Cheers

Really?

I use the AIS shop at Central on the beach; you take a number for English-speaking and I find them quite competent.

And there is a lad there who knows his stuff, including how to deal with rooted phones.

So maybe you should try there.

AIS usually have shops in the big malls. Don't know about the airport though, it's a bit pokey and past its sell by date.

If you're in Patong for any time, there's one in Jungceylon.

Thanks. I'll probably stop at patong for one day.

If you don't know, Jungceylon is opposite the end of Bangla Road (the other end from the beach, obviously!).
