Police Arrest 14 Foreigners in Human Trafficking Operation

Immigration police on Saturday arrested 10 people in a raid on a Phnom Penh bar and another four headed towards the Thai border over possible human trafficking. The director of investigations and procedure at the Department of Immigration, Major General Uk Heisela, old Khmer Times that his officers, led by a Phnom Penh Municipal Court prosecutor, raided Euro Bar on street 63 at Sorya Mall and arrested 10 people there.


Another four were arrested in Kandal province on their way to Poipet to leave the country. A Khmer woman who works at the bar was also taken in for questioning, he said. The 14 are 10 Bangladeshis, two Pakistanis, a Peruvian and a Filipino woman.


“The mastermind and a manager have been arrested,” he said. “They cheated them, telling them they would be given jobs here in Cambodia. But when they arrived, they were held in a house and not allowed to leave or contact their relatives.” The alleged mastermind and manager are among the 14. Police are still trying to determine who is involved in the possible crime and who may be victims.
