Frustration in Nepal as ‘aid remains unspent,’ one year after deadly quakes

KATHMANDU: -- One year on from the first of two devastating earthquakes in Nepal feelings of frustration, disappointment and despair are evident.

As MPs took part in a memorial ceremony in Kathmandu, a group of around 100 protesters rallied against what they perceive as inaction by the government in the wake of the catastrophe.

More than 9,000 people were killed in the magnitude-7.8 and 7.3 quakes, which occurred within 17 days of each other.

Millions more were left homeless. Aid groups report around one in seven people are still living in temporary accommodation, 12 months after the disaster.

According to the Red Cross, political quarreling means 4.1 billion dollars of international aid earmarked for construction remains unspent.

A period of three days of mourning has been designated to remember those who perished.

Right. Political quarreling. "OK guys how are we going to split this lot up between us?"

A great people with one of the worse governing bodies in the world and has been for a decades.

Sad news.

How surprising.

Governments like in Nepal are too criminal to be trusted with any amount of $$$.

Just like in Haiti after the quake, or in Thailand after the tsunami, it was proven that international bodies that offer help and relief should stop sending cash to in-effective governments after a major disaster and look for other ways and means.

Perhaps UN could play a much bigger and way more controlling role as well?

The Nepal government tried to charge import duty on the foreign relief items like tents that the world sent at the time.

But for a long time we have had banner advertising on this site up at the top saying "the only way to help Nepal is to donate money'. Hmmmm.
