NRSA approves report on public health and the environment

BANGKOK, 26 April 2016 (NNT) - The National Reform Steering Assembly has approved a report, which recommends an overhaul of the country’s garbage management system and all related laws.

At its sitting on Monday, the NRSA reviewed a report from the committee on the reform of public health and the environment, which is chaired by Mrs. Pornpan Boonyaratapan.

Committee member Raweewan Bhuridej explained to the NRSA that the report, which focuses on the reform of laws and the garbage management system, was conceived after it was found that the average amount of garbage each person produces on a daily basis, has been on the rise while garbage collection has not been in accordance with the principles of sanitation despite cooperation with the private sector.

Therefore, the committee has proposed a number of reforms such as an overhaul of the garbage management system in all communities and an update of related laws as well as the introduction of measures to educate the public and the setting up of a center to handle electronic waste.

NRSA members have broadly deliberated the issues and voiced their support for all suggestions before voting 154 to none, with three abstentions, to approve the report.

The committee will now consider all recommendations from the NRSA sitting to update the report, before presenting it to the Cabinet later.
