Durian

Featured Replies

Lots of cheap Durian around. Do you like it? I love it! As long as it is ripe. Could you describe the taste? Probably not my favourite fruit-prefer ripe Mangoes! Bought some dried strawberries. Sensational. Not a great fan, unlike Thais of unripe fruit.

I guess it depends on your location. I've seen some fairly puny segments on sale in the markets and Big C Extra in Pattaya for Baht 200 or thereabouts recently. Seems to be plenty available so hopefully market dynamics will drive the prices down.

Somewhat surprisingly fruit on sale at Friendship (they never have durian) or Tops is often cheaper than in the markets. Unfortunately what's usually available is pretty limited. Have seen mango slices on offer for Baht 100 at Big C Extra. Certainly far more expensive generally than a few years ago and I suppose the drought will make it even worse.

If it stinks, it is good. If there is not a strong smell it is crap.

I have wasted a lot of money in past years buying durian which turned out to be either unripe or terribly stringy. The good stuff is to die for but selection can be a high-priced wager.

Durian's reputation for smelling awful existed long time. Therefore people won't to taste it. For me it smells like sweet, sugary garbage and tastes like it too.

Hope that I didn't hurt someone's feelings.

Prices are high now, 100 baht/kg compared to 70 last year due to increased demand from Japan.
