Quality Staff Hard To Come By

To you all,

Im sick and tried of employing unskilled staff, can anybody help me find information about where I can recruit university graduates. I am based in pattaya so it seems to be very difficult here.

About 500-700 students graduate from our university English Major program every March. Many of them minor in business or computer-related studies. I think I could recommend some exceptional candidates from that pool. Since they are from Isan, most would be thrilled with a 10,000 baht monthly salary. (Twice the salary rate paid in Isaan). If you think I can help you, PM me with type of work available, company history, and skills required.

Sounds very promising. How would I go about recruiting from your university. I am looking for someone with knowledge and mircosoft excel, word etc but I have many friends with businesses who would love to employ university graduates. I actually have a friend who has a recruitment agency and he would love for you to help him with recruiting university qualified staff. We are all falang owned businesses so we dont really know how to recruit decent staff.

...and I have scores of talented students/grads with bachelor's and master's degrees who'd give their right arms to work in an English-speaking business environment.

I've just been awarded a research grant at our university to investigate how we can better place our more talented graduates, follow up their successes (or failures, God forbid) and maintain an ongoing networking opportunity for them as well as established or new businesses in Thailand (preferably through an internet website presence). As I have just begun to organize my project, I'm realizing this might be a great place to start.

PM me, and perhaps we can get the ball rolling right here, right now.

do not make the mistake of assuming that just because someone has a degree that they are skilled....this goes for every country...not just Thailand.

Chownah

Well-said. You need a strong recommendation from someone who knows the candidates to verify their discipline, resourcefulness, initiative and adaptability (among a dozen other employee-desirable qualities). A degree is only one of many indicators.

A note about the earlier "hire expats instead" sentiment: Yeah, if you don't mind investing all the time and effort into staff who may need to learn Thai language and culture, in order to operate at peak efficiency and with important cultural/llinguistic knowledge in your host country.

also don't assume that just because someone who has graduated from university can impress someone so that that someone recommends them that they are skilled...recommendations are commonly bought and sold in Thailand....I have no idea if toptuan fits into this sort of scheme or not...s/he seems kind of insistent though.

Stop being such a cynic, Chownah. If you've hired a dead-beat university graduate, my sympathies to you. Obviously, you didn't do your homework before offering the job.

There are actually some of us teachers who really are conscientious about trying to connect talented young people with opportunities. Yes, there are people we've graduated who I wouldn't hire to clean my toilet. On the other hand, there are some very talented, hard workers (I get to know them after teaching them four or five years!) who deserve a decent break. Yet, I would not expect an employer to hire someone on my recommendation alone. The hiring process should be much more thorough than that, in case you didn't realize it.

In the coming year I also will have requirements for 1 or 2 top quality Graphic Artists, familiar with Pagemaker, Corel Draw and InDesign CS2 to work with me near the town of Kamphaeng Phet. Good English language skills are a must. Ability to interact with potential Thai customers a plus. Have them email me their Resume, with photo, when within 1 month of graduation. I will then send them to a webpage where they can learn more information about the job, the benefits and the area in general.

Sorry to sound negative but how on earth does your friend run a recruitment agency without knowing where to find staff ?

Anyway - are you sure you want graduates OR experienced staff ? In my opinion - there's a huge difference between a fresh graduate & someone with a few years under their belt. For sure - if this is one of just a few staff - a graduate may be high maintenance.

First - contact the universities. On the first startup I was involved with in Thailand, we went to ABAC, told the Dean what we wanted and he loaned us facilities for a recruitment seminar. Even on a smaller scale, I cannot see them turning you away.

Second - go & put an advert on Jobsdb.com. Specify graduates.

Third - Advertise in Thai Rath or other Thai newspaper.

Fourth - contact the schools that do vocational training for specific skills like Excel & Word if that's all you need.

Cheers

Pedro

Thats about the going rate for graduates aint it.. even in BKK, not to mention Issan :o

going rate for some grads, but they have a pretty fast increase in salary quite soon after if they are any good. Useless ones happily work for that much; govt pays even less but has 'other benefits'; decent company will pay more quite fast if they are any good.

The higher ranked BKK unis are pumping out grads in some programs earning quite a bit more than that in the first week. Isaan only has KonKaen rated as being of decent standard though AFAIK, but I could be totally wrong about that; never had anyone graduating there apply for a job with any of my clients?
