Loy Katoey Festival

There are several modern and traditional festivals in Thailand each year. One of the newest festivals is Loy Katoey, which takes place at rivers, canals and lakes all over the country on the last full moon in October. The purpose of Loy Katoey is to try to reduce the number of ladyboys in the country. For those who celebrate Loy Katoey, the two most important aspects of the evening are the appearance of the Katoey and the way he is put into the water.

Firstly, the appearance of the Katoey is very important because it must be clear that the man or boy being put into the water is definitely a ladyboy. Sacrificing a man or boy who just wears pink sometimes, or has a funny walk will bring a year of bad luck. Ideally, a Katoey should have long, well-kept hair, a bag containing make-up and a mirror and lady’s clothes. He should also be wearing make-up and the lady’s clothes, including sexy underwear, at the time he is put into the river, canal or lake.

Secondly, the manner in which the Katoey is put into the water is important so that he can learn from his past mistakes and have his feminine side cleaned properly. Sharing or being greedy is not in the spirit of Loy Katoey, and therefore each ‘pusher’ must have only one Katoey, and vice versa. The Katoey must stand at the edge of the water and face his ‘pusher.’ His hands must be at his sides or placed on top of his head, but never covering his face, groin or chest. He shouldn’t be touched by his pusher because that involves physical contact. A long stick should be used, which will also prevent the pusher getting scratched by his long fingernails.. It is possible that the Katoey will make a girly scream when falling backwards into the water. This is normal and only proves that the ceremony is necessary.

As you can see, there are two important steps to remember for Loy Katoey to ensure a successful evening. The appearance of the Katoey to show it is fair and necessary and the actions involved in the ‘push.’ Loy Katoey is a modern ceremony in Thailand, and is becoming more popular each year.
