Work placement visa question - Non-ED or Non-B?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm a bit confused about the whole Thai visa process, so I have a question I'd like to put to the community:

I graduated last year from a master's program in Australia and after working for some time in Australia, I decided to apply for a work placement in my field in Thailand to get some overseas experience. If accepted, I'll be training with a Thai company that provides me with room & board and a small stipend, but no formal salary.

In this case, since I have already graduated from uni, would I need to apply for an Immigrant Non-ED visa or an Immigrant Non-B visa? I'm a bit confused because there's no clear explanation of the parameters for the Non-ED visa on the MFA site, and a number of different descriptions of the visa requirements exist on different Thai embassy/consulate sites in different countries.

Thanks in advance for your help on this one!

Hi John,

Thanks for the links, but I'm actually not Australian, I'm Canadian, and we don't have that sort of agreement with Thailand. :-/

You could get an ED visa since what your are doing is considered an internship. I susgggest you apply for a multiple entry non-ed visa since you will not qualify for extensions.

This under education visa after choosing Australia Canada on this page on Canberra embassy website. http://canberra.thaiembassy.org/Home/visa

Documents Required for Internship:

  • Your actual Passport or Travel Document. (Passport or Travel Document must not expire within 6 months and contain at least ONE completely empty visa page);
  • A completed and signed application FORM A;
  • One passport-size photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm.) taken within 6 months with a full-face view without hat or glasses. (Photocopy not accepted);
  • A letter from your employer stating your position, length of employment, date and purpose of visit;
  • An invitation letter from concerned company or organization in Thailand indicating length of stay and purpose of your visit;
  • A copy of concerned organization’s registration or license in Thailand.

Edit: Changed to Canada after OP's post. Same info is on website for Canada.

You will be an employee of that company and just going through some training so a non-b would be the only choice.

Thanks for all the helpful responses! The situation has evolved a bit--I submitted all the documents the company told me to in order to get an ED Visa... and the embassy issued me a B visa (I'm in Cambodia, went to the embassy in PP)... so now I've been told to fly to BKK, 'use' my single entry B visa, then fly to Singapore and get an ED visa at the embassy over there. Will do that in the next week or so... I hope it all works out.

Has anyone ever gone through this kind of visa switching? I hope it's as straightforward as it sounds....

Mmmm

Stay away from Singapore they can be very demanding/unhelpful !

You will be very lucky to get an ED visa within the region without documentation from a school or university.

Another "B" visa might be possible, with documentation supplied by the company. Vientiane or Penang would be good places to apply.

There is no rush to get the non-ed visa. Wait until the 90 day entry from the non-b is ending to go out to get it.

Not sure who told you to go to Singapore for the visa but that was terrible advice.

Your best choice to get a ED visa may be at Vientiane. See: http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/Visa/Non-%20ED%20&%20O.pdf

If not then you may have to try and get another non-b visa from Cambodia.
