Southern women groups call for peace zones where families can go without fear of violence

PATTANI: -- Woman groups in the insurgency-plagued southern provinces yesterday called for non-violence zones at market and public places where families can go and shop with no fear of violence.

They both are calling for all sides to adopt a more moderate attitude and enter into peaceful negotiations so that there is an end to violence.

The call by the Southern Women Family and Community Network which comprises 23 women groups in the deep South came as it marked the one year foundation anniversary of the network yesterday.

April 28 also marked the 12th anniversary of the Krue Se mosque violence in Pattani where over 70 southern militants died in fighting with government forces encircling them on April 28, 2004.

More than 500 women gathered at the Talad Thesvivat marketplace yesterday in Pattani to make their pleas for peace zone heard as security was heightened to prevent violence on this specific day.

The Southern Women Family and Community Network was petitioning for local markets and public places to be designated violence free areas in its effort to foster peace.

Ms Tasnim Jehtu, a working committee member of the women network, said all the women who take to the stage were united in their desire to see public places as safe zones that are free of violence for all.

She said women want all public places to be safe areas.

She said markets, shops and public roads in particular should be places where families can go to without fearing for their lives, and schools and all religious institutions must be sacrosanct.

“As women, we highly value safe public places where we can go to and meet our friends and our children can frolic and play safely,” she said.

She said the aim was not to interfere in any way with the political conflict but to have safe public places for regular people without having them becoming victims of violence such as on that tragic day 12 years ago.

She said women who attended the event have all called for all conflicting parties to put down their arms and desist from carrying out military action in public places and find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

The women network put forward a proposal from the Sutoh Southern Women group to organize talks between government forces and representatives from the Mara Pattani group.

Furthermore, they also asked that local women be allowed to perform civic duties peacefully without fearing arrest and interference from either government force or local sympathizers who oppose them.

Wouldn,t that be somewhat similar to the rather naive English woman who said that blood sports would be unnecessary if the foxes were trained not to kill chickens ? Some people just don,t play by the rules :(

The Muslim separatists would dearly love this...herd the population into small concentrated peace zones...lull them to sleep...then slaughter as many as possible...

There is NO peace zone with terrorists...they will only use the senseless killing of women and children to continue their reign of fear, violence, and destruction...

Such is the quality of life when living with Muslims bent on taking over a swath of land...

A gathering of families in a so called peace zone would be a perfect opportunity for a young member of the religion of peace to blow himself up and claim his 72 virgins in heaven.

t would be a rather more credible plea if it came from the men in their community.

it would be like holding a red flag to a bull, the terrorists would see a gathering of women and kids as the perfect targets and slaughter as many as possible. Having unarmed people in a group would be cannon fodder for them especially when they could not defend themselves or fire back, terrorists are basically cowards that will attack/kill anyone where their chance of being shot is low/non existent.

Have you any historical examples from the Southern Conflict where Muslim separatists have done exactly as you say they might do?

Again, have you any historical data to support Martyrdom in the name of their cause? Their cause is far different from the likes of ISIS

They see this every Friday at Prayer, they see this in schools and hospitals across the South, they see this in shopping Malls all over Thailand.. again historically speaking, can you provide any links where they've attacked such places when crowds have gathered?

The creation of safe zones was raised in August 2015 by the military to the insurgent umbrella group The MARA Patani.

But it appears then as now that the military will not allow people to perform civic duties peacefully without fearing arrest and interference from either government force or local sympathizers who oppose them.

Essentially, the military wanted commitments from the MARA without itself being obligated to any commitments. And that describes the whole peace process to date - stalled.

However, back in 2014, the PM stated the Insurgency would be over in 2015, that's another roadmap that's worked out well indeed.

There is amply evidence of how Muslim separatists...given the opportunity...slaughter innocent women and children in other countries...some Asian...

Take off your tinted glasses...google it...ask about the slaughter going on the Southern Philippines for decades...their violence against native populations is predictable and well documented...

I have asked specifically for information in relation to the SOUTHERN Insurgents, you know, the ones in THAILAND, the place the actual topic is about.

I don't need to take my glasses off, only this week Abu Sayauf in the Philippines beheaded a Canadian hostage... you need to read carefully what I have written, the questions posed were all in relation to the Southern Insurgency, which is the topic, not anywhere else.

So perhaps seeing as you seem to be an expert, give examples of Suicide attacks by the Southern Insurgents, mass attacks on places where people gather, where they've had substantial casualties too please.

Suicide attacks? Probably not. Roadside bombs and explosions in public areas? Almost every day.

Again I know this, but the posters I'm referring too are making it out to be along the lines of your average Middle Eastern extremist.. not so, and than God they're not, they have a completely different agendas.

Now, isn't this the same Junta who also said violence was on the decline just recently, but here you're acknowledging that there's attacks and violence almost every other day ;)

When the Insurgents start attacking tourists in shopping Malls, tourist resorts, and bombing key locations and infrastructures then I'll go along with their way of thinking.

At the end of the day, in another thread, Prayuth said he will not sit down and talk with any group still conducting hostilities, if you want peace in the South, he's going to have to, the British Government had to do the same to resolve Northern Ireland, secretly behind closed doors offering concessions.. The Good Friday Agreement was born, it saw the release of scumbags on both sides, who should have been on the end of a rope, but they were political pawns.

Prayuth and his Article 44 are like a chocolate fireguard when it comes to dealing with the South.

You mean like this:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/822265-samui-car-bomb-suspect-shot-dead-in-pattani-police/

I've also read about arrests made where bomb materials were found. I'll try to find the links. IMHO, it's only a matter of time before they start moving north with their campaign of fear. Hopefully, I'm wrong!!!

Not everything that happens here gets reported in the English news...

Now you see Craig, that Samui car bomb was allegedly politically motivated and NOT connected to the Southern Insurgency, Somyot when he was Chief of Police himself declared this, many posters here also believed everything he told them.

Even the Erwan shrine bombing wasn't an act of terrorism, it's was because of some other obscure bullshit.

Nothing that could possibly have an impact on their Golden Goose, Tourism, will ever make it to National, or International media outlets.

Peace zones? If you don't like it, leave. Ain't that the wisdom around here?
