Married in Australia want to register in Thailand

Featured Replies

I am married to a Thai national. We married in 2011 in Sydney. Now in the process of registering here in Phuket. We have been to the Aus Embassy in BKK, got the stamp on the marriage cert copy, translated, stamped by MFA Consular Dept. Took it all with lots of other stuff like Tabien Baan etc. to local Amphur office today and we were told we are on a waiting list and we will be called to come in and bring 2 witnesses over 20 years of age. I'm unclear as to why we need witnesses and what they need to do (as we are already married and the marriage certificate was signed by witnesses).

Has anyone else had this happen? I can't find any threads which mention it. If anyone else has had this experience can they please let me know what the witnesses were for and how it works. Thanks.

Just a bureaucratic requirement to have two witnesses. If you or partner don't have witnesses normally staff at the Amphur will act as witnesses for a small fee.
