I was able to convert a tourist visa to a 90 day Non-O visa at Phuket Immingration. They said I had to wait until it had 30 days left and then I could apply for the retirement extension.

Recently ?

Not really, that was about 3 years ago.

I do not believe Phuket now are able to do 'converstions'

You are correct they cannot do them.

Most people go to Penang to get a single entry non-o visa.

At what time in the morning can I enter Laos?

How much does entry cost at Laos border?

How much money needs to be in the bank for non-immigrant visa type O?. I see many different values!

I assume applying for Non-immigrant visa at the Thai Immigration Vientiane office can be done in one day if arrive at Laos border early enough?

Pick up passport next day after 13:30.

There is no Thai immigration office in Loas!

A visa is applied for one day and picked up the next working day at a Thai Embassy/Consulate.

For a non "O" visa based on retirement you need 800,000 Bht in Bank or certified evidence of a monthly income of 65,000 Bht

Loas visa on arrival cost depends on Nationality ------------ range 20-42 US$

Thanks for the correction Johnatong.

I'm no longer looking for retirement extension, as stated on OP I just need to stay in Thailand for 3-4 months while I arrange settlement in the UK. Any visa that can accomplish this is OK by me.

Did the same thing last year. Kinda funny, I knew the 1 year extension had expired. When I came threw the airport the guy at immigration kept telling me what kind of visa I wanted? He thought I did not know it had expired. Finally he said well, I am just going to give you 30 days???? OK LOL

Went to Penang, very easy for the O visa. Very nice folks there and quick turnaround. Back to Thailand and converted to 1 year extension with no problems.

The O visa is good for 90 day's I think then you can extend if I am not mistaken. More knowledgeable folks here can answer that.

If you enjoy travel like I do then it is great fun. Georgetown is a great place to spend a week or two also.

Good luck.

Extensions cannot be obtained in Laos only from immigration offices in Thailand!

You will not get an "O" visa then unless you are married to a Thai and can produce the paperwork proving that.

Perhaps you should apply for a tourist visa which with an extension will provide for a 90 day stay.

Yes John you were quite right. See attached photos.

I did end up getting a Non immigrant O visa, but had to provide original documentation that was not returned, they also took my bank book and stapled it to the application and passport, so I was in a foreign country without passport or bank book.

I got the visa and bank book back but other documents were not returned. This is a problem for me since one of these documents was a receipt from Thai immigration that had both an address and date on it which I need for UK immigration. As they take all documentation one day and issue the visa the next day, I didnt know I was not going to get originals back until too late.

The process in Vientaine, quite confusing not sure who was an agent and who official government personnel/queue, I later learned that I didnt need to wait in some of the queues because those queues were for agents working inside the visa compound.

If I now want to get a retirement extension can I do that right away, and not wait for the 90 day Non -immigrant type O visa to expire so I dont have to wait another 90 days before I can touch the money in my bank account?

Thanks for the correction Johnatong.
