Yemen's renowned religious expert visits Deep South

YALA, 6 May 2016 (NNT) - Yemen’s renowned religious expert, ALI ABOBAKR SHEIKH and his retinue have visited the southernmost provinces to observe religious practices of Muslim Thais in the South.


ALI ABOBAKR SHEIKH and his retinue were greeted by Region 4 Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Ruangsak Suwannaka and Yala's vice governor Udon Noitabtim. ALI ABOBAKR SHEIKH is making his third visit to the region.

Born in 1962 in Yemen, ALI ABOBAKR SHEIKH is the 42nd generation descendant of Nabi Muhammad (SAW). He is in charge of the dissemination of Islam in Asian countries. The objectives of his visit are to meet with religious leaders and Muslim people in Thailand and learn about the Thai government’ s policy on religion.

Lt-Gen Ruangsak confirmed the readiness of the Internal Security Operations Command to facilitate the activities of ALI ABOBAKR SHEIKH and his retinue throughout their five-day trip which continues until 6 May.

Strange - I googled his name and only came up with sites referring to this story. I hope he's not a Salafist trying to move his SE Asian brethren to a 'purer' form of Islam... a little concerning when it says that he's here to observe religious practices. That region has enough trouble already without an injection of Salafist/Wahabi ideology...
