Chiang Rai commemorates largest quake in country

CHIANG RAI, 6 May 2016 (NNT) - Chiang Rai province has organized an event to mark the second anniversary of a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Mae Lao district.

Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources Tawsaporn Nuchanong on Thursday presided over the event attended by Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai Arkhom Sukphan and more than 200 people in the province. The deputy governor said the earthquake on 5 May 2014 was the largest in Thailand in 100 years with more than 700 aftershocks.

The department’s director-general said the department recently constructed Thailand’s first-ever earthquake education center at the Tambon Sai Khao Local Administrative Organization in Phan district. The center provides information about earthquakes in an easy to understand way and how people should prepare themselves for earthquakes.

The department has installed new seismometers in Chiang Rai and other northern provinces in order to monitor active faults in these areas.

Can't believe that was 2 years ago... time flies.

I missed the biggie as I was in Bangkok doing embassy stuff but got to enjoy all the aftershocks.

Our house was only a few kms from the epicenter and we thought it was relatively undamaged (apart from all the booze falling out of the cabinet) until the first time it rained.

What were others who lived nearby doing at the time?

For people who are interesting to see realtime earthquake data, TMD has waveform service on their website.

The data used to be well updated, every 5 minutes or so, but is currently having some issues. They also dropped some monitoring stations, like one in Phuket, from their list.

One place to check, if you feel tremors.

There will be new anniversaries in the near future.

Maybe TAT can promote an Earthquake Day.

We felt the big one but almost none of the aftershocks. Living in the alluvial plains of Phayamengrai has turned out to be a good thing.wink.png

I remember it well. Our family were sitting at the dinner table. I heard the roar and then the house move a little. The fish tank then became a wave pool with water coming out either end.

I had previously experienced an earthquake in Australia and the roar was the same.

I remember an earlier one, the Mae Sai 'quake, it sounded like a heavy vehicle coming.

The quake was quite an experience. Lots of noise and the ground under our feet was pounding like the chop of a small motorboat going quickly over small waves.

It cracked a lot of walls near the columns in our house, but not bad enough to need repairs. We felt all of the aftershocks over 3.5. Some of them were impressive actually. We were only about 20k from the main quake but the aftershocks got within a few km's.

We were in the early stages of our house build when it hit so we rushed over to the site to check on the workers and to see if there was any damage.
