proof of flight leaving Thailand?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have been hearing and reading about people applying for tourist visas in various Thai embassies and being asked for proof of an ongoing flight. I have been out of the tourist visa loop for a few years, I myself have never been asked for this. Is this happening more now? Thanks

maybe I should ask: Has anyone experienced being asked for an ongoing flight from Thailand when applying for a tourist visa, and at which embassy?

They are asking for this routinely in some places. Examples are HCMC, Hanoi and Bali. Some consulates never seem to ask, such as Vientiane, Savannakhet and Penang. In other places, it seems to depend on the phase of the moon: they sometimes want it, sometimes not. An example is Phnom Penh.

The biggest problem, though, is knowing the places that try to avoid giving tourist visas, whatever you provide them. The most important examples of these are Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Most people don't get asked, as they know you can extend it for 30 days and if you're touring you are not really certain of your return date.

Asking to see a ticket or reservation seems to be quite standard, not just for Thailand, and I’ve always had to provide them with a copy of mine (and it’s also stated under required documents).

However, a few times it has been a one-way ticket, and once it was just an unpaid reservation. This did not cause any issues.

Phnom Penh is my preferred place for a visa run:

1) pay an agent 15/20 bucks and they will do everything for you - even show an outbound flight - no need to wake up and waste your life at the embassy.

2) A night out is cheap as chips - hand over your passport, enjoy a few nights out, boom! visa done.

(2 full days required - airasia flights dont work for the timing)

Which agent do you use or what hotel does it for you?

I did one 3 weeks ago, don't recall the agents name, but (looking at the river) he was immediately left of 136 street on the river front. To be honest though, Ive used different agents in the past, and they all seem to offer the same service. Just walk in and chat with them

If you apply for a 60 day tourist visa in Vietnam, either in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city you MAY be asked to show a ticket out of Thailand at the end of that 60 day stay.

Both Thai consulates state that this is a requirement, but in practice, they seem to sometimes ask and sometimes don't.

It seems to be something they decide to ask or not when you apply. based on your looks and how they feel that day

Does Savannakhet. currently ask for any supporting bookings etc to get a single-entry tourist visa ?

Is it just the application, photos and fee and you are good ?

No they don't. Just your passport and a completed application form. Copy of passport photo page and Lao visa/entry stamp.

I obtained a tourist visa to Thailand at the Consulate in Bali, Indonesia. They asked for flight details into and out of Thailand. If my memory serves me right they also wanted hotel booking details and copies of a bank statement.

So yes, it does happen.

Yes that is correct re Bali. In regards to say hcmc, I read one report on TV about needing an onward flight. In the past this was not the case. Consulate websites cannot be relied upon. I would ask consulate. Only way to know for sure.
