Having American Marriage License Translated for Type 0 Visa?

Featured Replies

Hi,
My wife and I are both Americans, I am a teacher who recently received his Thai work permit, she is not working. She is on a spousal "type 0" visa, we recently went to Immigration to extend the 90-day "type 0" into a one year visa and they told us we needed a translated copy of our U.S. Marriage License and told us to go to the U.S. Embassy and then to Chaengwattana.

I'm trying to figure what we need to bring to the Embassy and what we need to bring to Chaengwattana?

What do I ask for at the Embassy? Where does the translation happen?

Do we both need to be present for either?

Thanks in advance.

-Sam

i would think the embassy will issue a confirmation of authenticity which you will need to translate into thai many such companies around wireless road or even outside embassy and then to Chaengwattana.

Thanks. If I can get the translation done Wireless Road, what are they doing at Chaengwattana?

(My actually Immigration Office is Pathum Thani. They are telling me to go to the embassy and then to Chaengwattana and then back to Pathum Thani)

Normally a document in English does not have to be translated.

You will need to do a self certification of your marriage certificate at the embassy by doing an affidavit stating that it is true and correct You will need to make an appointment at the embassy. Info and affidavit form download is here. http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/notarial-services.html

Then go to a translation service to have your marriage certificate and the affidavit translated. The translation will then need to be certified by consular affairs department of the MFA in Chaeng Wattana. The translation service can get the certification done for small additional fee.

List of translators from embassy is here: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/thailand/231771/acs/translators_internet_service_photographers.pdf

I think my post should make things clearer for you.

Thanks Joe! Major help, that cleared things up.

I have a similar but just a bit different need. Need to get my Thai marriage license (official with fancy border from Amphur office) translated from Thai to English then get both certified as an apostile, presumably at MFA office. The product would be sent FedEx to a Latvian gov't office in Riga. So OK, I show up at the MFA office with the original license and translation, then what is the process to get the two items certified? How long does it take and what costs?

As said let the translation company take care of the MFA part.

I went by my self eight years ago and had to wait in line for four hours.

Do not remember the cost.
