Mexico says El Chapo can be extradited to the US to stand trial

MEXICO -- The extradition to the United States of drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has moved a step closer after a second Mexican judge gave the go ahead.

The process still awaits approval of Mexico’s foreign ministry and it can be appealed.

Guzmán was arrested in January after almost six months on the run following his escape from a maximum security prison through a mile-long tunnel that opened to the floor of his shower.

He is wanted on drugs charges, money laundering, and murder and is wanted by seven federal prosecutors in the US, including in Chicago, New York, Miami and San Diego..

He had already escaped once before in 2001 and spent more than a decade as one of the world’s most wanted fugitives until he was recaptured in 2014.

I read an article based on an interview with some high-ranking associate of his, and apparently one of the most terrifying things to these drug lords is fear of incarceration in the USA. Why? Granted, incarceration any place would not be a #1 thing on anyone's "to do" list, but aren't the prisons in the USA pretty posh vs prisons in say, Mexico or Colombia? Three square meals a day, hot showers, air con/heat, TV, exercise yards, libraries, etc.

This is assuming they wouldn't be sent to Guantanamo. That's only for terrorists, and not drug lords, right?

I suspect it's not because of any human rights to minimal accomodations (3 meals a day is hardly "posh") but more to extreme restrictions on daily movement and little or no opportunity to escape a high or supermax security federal prison. He won't be cell mates with white collar criminals like Maddox. Even with an escape, USA law enforcement can react very quickly and for a foreigner with El Chapo's visibility and lack of familiarity with USA culture will find it extremely difficult to evade capture - that's likely to end with his death.

So it's the lack of escape opportunities as much as the amenities of prison life itself, then? I wonder how other inmates would view him (assuming he's not in solitary.) Would he be respected ( as a hero or a leader?) or just another prisoner or ...?
