Parties are to be allowed to express opinions on draft charter

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krua-ngarm has been assigned to find ways to allow political parties to express their views on the draft constitution before the national referendum scheduled on August 8.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said that he would prefer political parties to express their opinions in forum to be staged by the Constitution Drafting Committee or the Election Commission. This format of opinion expression by politicians was done before, he added.

Personally, General Prawit said that he was not worried whether the draft charter would pass the referendum or not. But he admitted that he would prefer the draft charter to sail through the referendum so that there would be an election next year.

The deputy prime minister denied he had ever talked about picking one of the previous charters to be used in case the draft charter fails in the referendum because the previous charters such as the 1997 charter or the 2007 charter were flawed.

Asked about the government’s efforts to inform and educate the public about the draft charter, General Prawit said officials concerned had already been dispatched across the country to do the job and public response was very positive.

He insisted that the government would strictly use laws as the basis to maintain peace and order. He also pleaded with all political groups to understand the government’s intention to enable the country to move forward.

Find ways to allow political parties to express their opinions ?

Shows the extent of the mess this country has been dragged into.

The easiest way would be to simply say, feel free to tell us what you think, I promise not to execute, if you give the wrong answer.

Many will not want to voice their opinions openly with S44 and attitude adjustment in place. In working with Thais everyday, you find that they are scared to death to talk about politics. How do you go from the shutting down of free speech and open coercion to an open society ? It just does not seem likely. Any junta supporters care to explain ?

Reading statements like this makes me sometime wonder if I'm living on the far side...coffee1.gif

The headline says political parties will be allowed....

The actual article says the Deputy PM has been assigned to "find ways..."

Not the same thing at all. What exactly the DPM will "find," who knows???

And of course, even if political parties were allowed, that's only them -- not individual Thai citizens.

That's simple. Any political party that wants to express negative views on the draft will have to do so OUTSIDE of the country. Upon re-entry they will be arrested for violation of the law, banned from politics for five years and lose the right to vote. Freedom of expression Junta-style.
