BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has invoked Section 44 of the interim constitution to order the appointment of Pol Gen Chaiya Siriamphankul, an inspector-general, as the new secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) bypassing selection process.

General Prayut, in his capacity as head of the National Council for Peace and Order, said in the order that it was not known how long it would take for the Amlo secretary-general to be selected because there was no specific timeframe while Amlo has many obligations with foreign governments to fulfill, hence the need for the appointment of the secretary-general without going through the selection procedure.

Pol Gen Chaiya will serve Amlo in his acting capacity as of May 18 until his appointment is endorsed by the National Legislative Assembly.

Amlo has been without its chief since the Cabinet on March 13 removed Pol Col Sihanart Prayoonrat from the post without any explanation. He was named an advisor to Amlo.

Why couldn't he simply act in the position until a permanent AMLO secretary-general is selected by proper (and open) process? After all, the permanent position has been vacant since 13 March.
