November 8, 200619 yr I live in Khanom (Nakhorn Si Tammarat) and have a goldcyber package from TOT. Package came with the standard TOT modem from AVBell - the USB hook up worked initially but now not at all. Modem gets very hot and after good connection speeds in first week or so the DSL link is now dropping out every 5 minutes or so - and speeds are not even up to regular phone modem when it does link up!!! Very frustrating. I purchased an SMC 7904BRA to see if this modem might give me better connectivity. Despite the fact this modem is getting an IP address from the network I have never managed to open up 192.168.2.1 to configure the SMC modem. I have followed all trouble shooting steps from SMC Singapore site and have tried any hints off the TV forum - but nothing works. Any suggestions anyone - apart from switching back to a regular phone line modem - which will at least stay on and let me send and receive e-mails!!! Any help appreciated - thanx!!

November 8, 200619 yr Author don't most modems have IP 192.168.1.1 ??opalhort SMC paperwork says 192.168.2.1, TOT modem is 192.168.2.1 - but have also tried 192.168.1.1 - nothing works!!
November 8, 200619 yr Assume you are using XP and have done steps 2/3 from manual (remove proxy HTTP and confirm contact with command prompt)? The IP address is correct at 192.168.2.1 and you just enter that in the IP window of browser and hit connect/go to and you should get the sign on screen for SMC if everything it hooked up right. I guess you are not getting the sign on screen from your post. If you have another browser on computer try using it. The full entry in browser should be: http://192.168.2.1/

Have tried firefox as an alternative browser - only thing left to try from troubleshooting is 'a new computer'!!

November 9, 200619 yr exactly like this C:\>ipconfig It should show the WAN side IP address (TOT) or whatever It should show the LAN side IP address (PC-Router side) Just trying to help....
November 10, 200619 yr Author exactly like thisC:\>ipconfig It should show the WAN side IP address (TOT) or whatever It should show the LAN side IP address (PC-Router side) Just trying to help.... Thanks digitele - done all that many times - get 192.168.2.xx for TOT side, 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask and 192.168.1.1 for LAN side. Appears to communicate with ISP ok - but just will not load - always times out!!! Have tried everything suggested on TV site and SMC site - except 'try another computer' - my notebook fried some weeks ago and not got THB to replace it yet. The technician came yesterday - hooked the TOT modem back up, it worked but still drops out (link down) every 5-10 minutes - speeds are slow and takes forever to download files (even small ones) due to waiting for link to come back up. Same with e-mails!!!! Told him all this but he just said 'yes' and left!!!
November 10, 200619 yr Have you set your DNS Servers in your modem or in your OS. See for the addresses the link below. http://203.154.210.35/index.htm If you've set them and it still doesn't work, try to lower the MTU Value in the modem. Petch01

You did type IPCONFIG/RELEASE from command prompt so it could obtain new information?

Sounds like no fun with the additional TOT modem problem. I am thinking here, so bear with me. Some stupid questions (Gotta' exclude the simple stuff) OK? 1) Do you have another LAN cable to try? (Straight through) Or are you on a USB port? 2) Which version of SMC firmware do you have? I had one of those (exactly) before. I bought it in Thailand and it had the old firmware version. I upgraded from their website. 3) Try the release/renew as well. Clear all temp files and caches. Let us know how your doing and we'll try to help. Good Luck, it's usaully something simple so trobleshoot calmly as you can.
November 13, 200619 yr Author The gateway has to be 192.168.2.1 (or did you mistype?). You did type IPCONFIG/RELEASE from command prompt so it could obtain new information? Yep, have gone thro ipconfig 'release' and 'renew'. The gateway IS 192.168.2.1. The 1.1 refers to the ethernet after the modem - was 2.1 for the usb hook up. The USB will not work anymore - which leads me to think might be a problem with the modem?? Hence reason for trying the smc modem - process of elimination. Thks lopburi3

Thanks again digitele! 1) Yes, have tried another LAN cable 2) Firmware might indeed be the problem? I noted from SMC web site that there were upgrades for this model - but don't know how to check the smc modem or how to upgrade the firmware!!?? Tried to find the modem thro control panel / system / hardware / device manager - but cannot locate!!?? Any help on this techie stuff greatly appreciated! 3) Have tried ipconfig release / renew several times and clearing temp files and cache - IE and Firefox - still no go! Think the firmware issue might be the one! Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for any assistance. You are welcome. The version I had was SMC7904BRA_v0.39_firmware. So on the SMC site go to downloads/firmware and look for your model SMC7904BRA, then the version should be v0.39 or higher. It sounds like it is the firmware. Good luck, and let me know.
November 14, 200619 yr Tried to find the modem thro control panel / system / hardware / device manager - but cannot locate!!?? It will not appear as is attached to your network adapter (LAN) card. The network adapter will appear and should also appear in "connect to" and as high speed/LAN; and in mine in properties is set up for Client for Microsoft networks, TCP/IP, printer sharing and Qos Packet Scheduler.
