Tesco Mall south of Chalong circle - dying

About 10.00 today I parked in the Tesco mall to buy some groceries at Tesco. I had not been there for a month or so. First thing that struck me was how empty the car park was. mind you it was early. Then I noticed that the Black Canyon place was now a massage parlour. The place above was for empty and for rent. Many shops empty and for rent. I know one bank moved out a few months ago. Sign of the bad times ahead.

I think the Tesco itself will still do o.k. as many people Rawai, will not want to venture through the construction zone.

But yes, as for other shops there, tough goings.

Also the Tesco itself is always very, very quiet.

The Tesco further North, just before the PTT station on Chao Fa West, is doing better, but for a big Tesco also not very well. On a very busy day a 1/2 filled carpark, and never busy inside.

Well what did they expect? It's filled with only what Thais want in an area dominated by farang, burmese and muslims and they have makro next door offering those "thai" things at better prices.

Yes, but just next door, Makro seems to be doing very well. Actually I find I'm going there a lot these days.

Yes, the Makro next door seems to be doing well. Not so sure about the new Makro in Kata - seems dead ... ??

I only go there for the ice cream shop which is fantastic. South of the circle and just on Viset road, we have seen a big Supercheap, two mid size Supercheaps, Makro and a small Tesco getting build in the last 5 or 6 years. It's not surprising that Tesco doesn't attract the same number of customers anymore.

Swensen also moved out of there a while ago. Black Canyon and a bank gone too? Tough times indeed it seems. But not for the general economy I think, just for this scale of Tesco.

You can get better stuff at Makro most of the time and for having lunch/dinner while shopping, the Tesco Lotus there never had proper options compared to the bigger Tescos around Phuket. The one in Thalang is always packed even though there's also a big Makro basically across the road.

The Tesco near the cycle is in a not so optimal middle ground between a small Tesco and the big ones. A bad compromise. It only used to work as long as there was no big Tesco and Makro around.

Supercheap is grotty......

Dirty is an understatement,,,,

And smells bad too. Just like the rat and pigeon shit from the original SuperCheap central. It's amazing how they maintain that smell in every shop ...

I hardly ever go to that Tesco - just use the car park while I go to the Bakery.

I always go to Makro.

My bank - Krung Thai - moved out months ago. They didn't tell me so I made a trip all the way up there only to find out it's now 1/2 mile from where I live. mad.gif

I just park right outside the Bakey - my favourate bread/roll bakery.

Yes, Krung Thai. Now I have to go through the circle, past poilce station, and it's on the right. Not such a big hassle for me as 3BB office moved from Karon to Chalong just opposite the police station.

I used to park there too, but it can be very hard to get away when there is a queue of cars waiting to turn right out of the car park, half way across the left lane, and other cars passing you to turn left into the car park. Now that high season is over, it's probably not so bad. But I just think of the walk as a bit of exercise smile.png.

I didn't realise 3BB were there now. I'll have to pop in and ask them why I am paying more for my ADSL 16 Mb/s speed than they are offering on their web site for 20 Mb/s VDSL. mad.gif

Edit:

It's 50 Mb/s VDSL, not 20! Jesus wept!

i am surprised that tesco didnt leave the country yet, as carrefour and big C did!

Big C left the country? Maybe you confused it with something else? It certainly is still here and I don't think it will move out anytime soon. Being a public Thai company under the Central Group umbrella and all that.

You're about 30 years out of date, as Big C was effectively taken over by the French Casino Group in 1997. They have recently sold out to TCC Group, the same company that makes Beer Chang. Don't think it's completed yet as there are plenty of Casino products still available in store.

You are right, they are not under the Central umbrella but the TCC one (soon?). Either way I think my main point stands as it's still a public company on the Bangkok stock exchange (http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/BIGC:TB), (soon?) owned by a Thai billionair. They are not leaving the country anytime soon. Also 2016-1999 (not 1997) is 17, not 30 if we want to be precise.

I'd guess that Bender meant Casino Group. Yes, the Big C name survives. Sorry about my maths!

At the Jungceylon Big C, they had a sign in the import food section that said something like "even though there's been a change of ownership, we'll continue to stock Casino products". That was 2-3 months ago, and I haven't noticed any significant change in the mix of Casino products imported from France since then.
