BANGKOK, 23 May 2016 (NNT) - The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has encouraged people to take a rare opportunity to observe Mars, which is entering its closest orbit for 11 years.

NARIT Deputy Director Sarun Posayajinda explained that the Earth is currently moving between the red planet and the sun, where the two planets will remain relatively close to each other until May 31st, before orbiting away.

At this distance, Mars can be seen with the naked eye as a bright red spot in the sky at night. With a telescope, stargazers can see the surface of the sister planet.

NARIT will provide more than 20 telescopes for people at various locations, including Siam Paragon and a stargazing tower at Chiang Mai University, as well as other locations in Chachoengsao and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces.

Why was my first thought: Some Jet Ski proprietor will con some sucker into renting a "Special" Jet Ski that is equipped to go to Mars, and when the poor guy complains he will get beaten up for causing trouble?

I've been living her too long and what use to be cynical has morphed into being keenly observant.
