phibunmike
Hi, Can someone help with names of metals ? So far it seems to me that: "lek" can be either generic metal or else steel; stainless steel is just called "stainless" (pronounced "stanlet"); "tong" can be either gold or bronze (or brass ? - my dictionary says bronze is "tong sam lit" and brass is "tong luang", but I have not heard these); "ngern" is silver; Are these correct ? And what others do you know ? Thanks, Mike

Rikker
เหล็ก by itself is iron, and เหล็กกล้า is steel. สังกะสี is zinc or galvanized iron, not something you'd think you'd talk about a lot, but it's what I would call "corrugated tin" on sight, the stuff often used for roofs of houses in poorer areas/slums. ตะกั่ว is lead. ทองสัมฤทธิ์ is bronze, or also ทองบรอนซ์. ทอง is gold, but ทองคำ is more specifically yellow gold. And yes, ทองเหลือง is brass, your dictionary is correct. What other types of metal are we missing now? And if anybody was wondering, โลหะ is the word for 'metal' in general.
