First Thai woman conquerer of Mount Everest recalls her inspiration

BANGKOK: -- The first Thai woman to conquer Mount Everest, Ms Napassaporn Chumnarnsit, said the success was inspired by her determination to have the picture of the King and the Thai national flag on the mountain summit.

The 32-year-old dentist at Prachuab Khiri Khan provincial hospital recalled her May 19 successful adventure to the world’s highest mountain after she and her team of mountain climbers were honoured by the Nepalese minister of Tourism and Sports after they returned safely to ground.

Thai ambassador to Nepal was also at the meeting where she was honoured with a certificate and flowers.

Ms Napassaporn or Doctor-Oeem said her success in climbing Mount Everest was inspired by her strong determination to have the image of His Majesty the King and Thai national flag on the top of the Everest.

She recalled that the first moment when she reached the Everest summit was that she felt empty.

This was because the moments before reaching the summit, she didn’t think of anything else, even herself, but only one thing in mind that the King image and the Thai flag must be there.

It was also the many desires that had wished and encouraged her to fufill her dream, she said.

She said if she just think of herself she would never achieve the mission.

She said as she was climbing higher and higher, she seemed to feel like discovering some facts of life.

It was that if one has strong determination to do something, nothing could stop no matter how big the obstacle and the difficulty will be.

Her team which include another Thai climber Komrat Pichitdet, and a Norwegian climber will be in Katmandu to celebrate the team’s success on May 29 before returning to Thailand.

Earlier a Thai climber Vithitnan Rojanapanich has also conquered the Everest peak on May 22, 2008.

Few decades too late love, even kids have done it, no big deal.

Another miserable TV loser. Ever achieved anything, ever?

No big deal? Tell that to the four climbers who have died on Everest since Friday, two more missing presumed dead.

My Wife has difficulty with the Cold on a 3000m mountain (skiing) - Everest is life and death, pure planning and survival plus a little fortune - Its a very big deal !!!

Climbing mountains is dangerous and idiotic, I don't cheer when they manage it and don't cry when they get killed. Nobody forces them to do it, it's pointless and of no benefit to anyone except their own egos.

Unbelievable. Everest kills many every year, including 19 in a single recent incident. It's still a massive challenge. Presumably you are rather bitter, that you have achieved so little? As are those sad individuals who will always belittle the successes of others.

A psychologist might note that people who feel compelled to take on a challenge like this, want to impress people. The first person they want to convince that they are worthwhile is themselves.

The real question for me is: "why would they want to convince themselves that they are worthwhile". The answer is obvious: "because they don't think that at the moment".

The same goes for planting a flag or something else at the summit. Who are they desperate to convince that they're a loyal Thai? Who are they desperate to be noticed by? Themselves and anyone else who cares. Not unique to Thais, but Thais seem to have more self-worth issues than most other people I've come across. A cynic might observe that they're right to have self-worth issues.

Life is great if you don't weaken.

I wonder when the first Thai transgender climber will conquer Everest?

In high heels? Now that would be something.

Congrats to the young lady, but I really don't think we need all the rest of the hyperbole in the OP. What she did is because she set out to do it, that's all.

....some people still have questions about this 'event'....

.

Yes.

And my opinion is that this Mnt.Ev. climbing is a very irresponsible industry, at the cost of many lives resources and environment to satisfy the selfish greed of a few.

Chill dude, he's expressing an opinion, which he's entitled under forum rules to do.

You are attacking or abusing him which you are not entitled under forum rules to do.

Seems like you might be taking his comment a bit personally, would there be any reason for that?

I'd hazard a guess and point out my suspicion that those who think this isn't a big deal have never made any physical commitment of any sort... i.e. running a Marathon...

Of course, you don't need to run a Marathon to have an opinion... but, having done so would go some way to understanding the commitment and effort this lady has gone to in achieving an incredible feat of human endurance.

And no, I haven't run a marathon (yet) either... but thats not really the point... some people are just way too negative and can't see anything positive..

Britain have just been celebrating the First Britain on the International Space Station.... Thailand are celebrating the First Female to Summit Everest.

These are both incredible feats involving in spades... teamwork, commitment, training, ambition, focus, technical expertise, mental tenacity, self belief....

......BUT... its much easier to dismiss them from a barstool... there are some very sad and depressing individuals around.

That's a non-sequitur. Your conclusion cannot be inferred from what was actually said.

For those of us living in reality... This is a highly impressive achievement.

By 'us' do you mean you, your wife and your Mum or do you mean to imply agreement support from the public at large? The former is reasonable, the latter is laughable. But then we both know what you meant to imply, that your view is the 'right' one.

Its a very big deal !!!

Anything that's been done by thousands of people is not a very big deal any more than holding the Guinness Book Of Records record for jumping up and down in a bouncy castle is a very big deal. It might be a significant personal achievement but it isn't a 'very big deal'.

You might think it is, he obviously doesn't and fwiw, neither do I. The idea of a Thai flag fluttering atop Mount Everest to the oohs and aaahs of the international community is faintly ridiculous. I have no comment to make about any picture or any related issue.

Not really, in fact not at all. By the way, the expression is Jobsworth, not Jobsworthy. I detest PC and PC people, usually yuppies with limited actual creativity but lots of fashionable-word-awareness. Trendies who cover their inadequacy with buzz-words and fantasies about diversity and stuff. Worse than gullible Thais and their 50-year-old fashion and soap operas about ghosts wearing eye shadow.

Just tedious and indicative of stunted development.

Or perhaps you just can't understand different, non-testosterone viewpoints.

Age and a bit more grey hair usually improves that. It'll help you control the urge to quote other people as well.

Needless to say, it would not be a successful expedition unless she hit a few sherpas with her stilettos and tried to mug other climbers along the way.

Nah. I'll be too busy planning to climb the tree in my backyard. It doesn't need climbing or anything, it's just that my self-esteem needs a boost so I'll clamber up it to prove I'm a worthwhile person.

And I'll take a picture of QE2 with me and pin it on the very toppest branch. Then I'll phone the BBC and tell them the Queen of England was my inspiration.

They'll be so impressed they'll probably send a messenger round to the Palace to tell her straight away. I may get a knighthood or a line somewhere on page 12 of the Sun.

Wow!! I can hardly wait for tomorrow to come, I'm so excited to think people will be impressed with me.

Never happened before.

Winnie

ps Thanks to all those TV jockeys who explained how important it is to impress other people. I'll go for the jumping-up-and-down-in-a-bouncy-castle record next. Lots of kudos in that!
