Hello everybody.

My gf would like to visit Europe and apply for a tourist visa. I was thinking that if you apply for around 2 weeks the financial requirements will be a bit easyer (34eu a day) and also it would look more realistic considering the fact we actually are planning to stay around 2+ months.

Is there anybody out here who could give some advice if this route is even possible.

When you ask for 2 weeks will the visa be valid only 2 weeks?

Can we book a return ticket for that period and after obtaining the visa change it for a longer period?

Will the customs look awkward on the way back if we go back later then the first mentioned dates on application?

Thanks alot!

I think loads of people could have commented, but were probably too polite.

What you're suggesting is risky to the extreme, and could lead to your girlfriend being denied boarding when she leaves Thailand or, at worst, being denied entry into Schengen when she arrives at the border.

When she applies for her visa she has to submit evidence of affordability, you indicate that's going to be difficult, details of accommodation for the duration of her stay in the Schengen Area, flights to and from Schengen to match up with her travel plans and insurance.

You want her to apply for a visa of a shorter duration, say a reasonable week or two, and then want her to extend it for a couple of months.

That would be regarded as a material change, it could be argued that the original visa had been fraudulently obtained. Any reasons to return would be shot out of the window by extending her stay by that length of time.

In answer to your other question, visas are often limited to the actual days that the applicant has provided evidence for the time they intend to be in Schengen, my partners first two visas were issued with a validity of four and seven days within a one month window.

To sum up, can it be done, yes possibly, but it's a highly risky strategy for her, if not for you, she's the applicant and it's her that would be accountable.

The financial requirement for self sufficient tourists is different for each member state. The Netherlans uses the 34 euro/day (per person) you mentioned, Other states use lower or higher figures. Seen numbers runing as law as in the 20's and as high as into the 60's. So do check what exactly the financial requirements are for the country which you apply for!

You are required to be honest in your application, so if you already are certain that you will stay longer then 2 weeks it would be best to apply for the number of days that you have in mind. Ofcourse plans can change, so extending a visa is possible. In some member states this is easier done then others. It's generally not something worth considering if you are simply honest from the start, and it avoids odd looks and question for things such as future visa applications.

Can it be done though? Yes. But I would not risk it unless I was caught with no other choice.

Hello all, thanks for the anwswers that was exactly what i was wondering. I thought the visa would give you 3 months regardless of how many planned days. Extending will horrible i might imagine. I guess we are better of stating the full period and hope for the best.

Finances are not a problem but i can imagine them having doubts about a person who can leave her work for longer then 2 weeks up to 3 months.
