Just moved to Kumphawapi (near [36km] Udon Thani)... 2 questions:

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to the area, having retired in March, after living in BKK for 10 years...

In BKK, I was able to visit a small Immigration office nearby my home in Phra Pradaeng in order to take care of the 90 day reporting... avoiding the queue and other CW Immigration stress...

So the first question is... Is the Udon Thani AIRPORT Immigration office the ONLY office where I can take care of the 90 reporting? Yesterday I was driving a few blocks from the Tukcom Mall in the city, and briefly saw (down a side soi) an office that had a sign saying Immigration...???? Is it an alternative to the Airport office? Are there other choices? Sorry, I wasn't in a position to stop, drive back and ask them there....

Second question... when it comes time to do my second Retirement Extension (first one was in March, in BKK) would it make better sense to do this again in BKK (at the CW Office) or do you guys think I should give it a try at the Airport Udon Thani Immigration office? I have to go to BKK anyway, to get another "Affidavit of Income" notarized at the US Embassy, so it wouldn't be a huge inconvenience to do it again at CW Immigration...

I appreciate any current advice that can be offered; I DID do some searching on the TV site already, but much of the info is between 3 to 6 years dated...

Best regards,

Pawpcorn

You have to deal with the Immigration Office in the area where you live.

This means you will now have to deal with Udon.

As said you will have to do your extension at Udon Thani.

Prior to doing your first 90 day report there you will need to formally change your address at immigration by submitting a TM28 change of address form.

You will not have to go to Bangkok to get your income affidavit. The ACS does consular outreaches to Udon Thani and Khon Kaen. This years schedule is here: http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/consular_outreach.html

The sign you saw near Tukcom is for the Main Immigration Office.

I don't think the airport branch has been used for a few years.

Everything else is as Ubonjoe states.

Immigration is no longer at the Udon Airport. It's more conveniently located just off of Phosri Rd, pretty much in the center of town. It's about 500m down Phosri Rd from the center fountain circle.

Kumpawapi. Enjoy the monkey park. Quite a nice area, also with some dairy farms. Quite heavy traffic, and a poisonous looking sugar factory quite close to the town. As others have said , the airport office is closed, the other place is OK, don't be one of those fools who give officials a 500baht tip for doing their job.

As stated above , the office is as shown in post #5.

They are fairly efficient most of the time.

90 day reports ....................usually in and out in 2 mins. Just depends how many in line before you.

They are pretty good with extensions, although they did apply an under consideration for 30 days to my extension( based on retirement) last month ........but as I had applied 30 days EARLY ...................the under consideration was actually 60 days. But all done now.

Tip ................on entry get a number ( red or green plastic strips ) off table on your right as you enter. Blank forms here also.

It as a small office with limited seating ..............and virtually no parking except for bikes.

The immigration office is located at the back of the cop shop complex. Yes, parking is difficult. Knock on wood, I've found the staff to be friendly and helpful, with the possible exception of Mr. 90 day who seldom smiles but is efficient, don't be late! I go back #17 for all my extension/multiply exit/entry permit stamps after the 30 day waiting period. If you need to leave the Kingdom before that time tell them and they will "work" it out for you. I recommend when you do extension of stay do so early, find out if you are missing something they want you to have.

although they did apply an under consideration for 30 days to my extension( based on retirement)

That they do retirement extensions with a 30 day under consideration period is quite a rare "feature".

(as far as I remember not the only one but very rare)

No so convenient.

Can get complicated if it collides with (overseas) travel plans.

Quite heavy traffic, and a poisonous looking sugar factory quite close to the town.

If the OP lives in Kumphawapi town on rd. 2 (where the sugar factory is close by) or somewhere in the Kumphawapi district?

Indeed that "sweet" smell of a sugar factory can be annoying.

And the best feature is indeed the four lane highway to Udon tongue.png

Walked up and down that stupid road looking for immigration

only to realise i was on the road behind immigration so i

now point out the SIGN and the BLUE BUILDING but no 500

baht tip, they always ask for it.

Yes, that's the one, 2 minutes in and out, but only will deal with the 90 day form for us farangs... (it's mainly set up to deal with Myanmar worker passports, etc)

I actually posted a topic on this place a couple years ago, complete with map, but it seems to have vanished off my member profile, for some reason...

This link should show the map, but you'll have to zoom out once, for the streets to show...

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcomes and help... my saga at Immigration yesterday will follow, in the next "reply"...

I STARTED OUT in a rental house, in the town of Kumphawapi, but first heavy rain showed that the site was sitting in a depression, and heavy rains led directly to the house being flooded; funny how the landlord never thought to mention that small detail...

SOOOOooo two weeks after moving in, (having installed my OWN air-conditioner, and numerous (to make it livable) improvements... we were forced to move AGAIN, due to the major flooding problems from the rainfall; some major baht loss there!!!

NOW living in a brand-new spacious house in Phan Don, which is 6km from the town of Kumphawapi, and very very nice, about 1km from the highway to Udon Thani, and with the exception of NO 7-11 (can NOT buy fresh milk!!!) and now 6km drive to Lotus for the cheese, coffee beans, milk, and other LOL farang essentials... QUITE NICE, at 6000 baht a month; 2 bedroom (finally have my own study/office!!) large living room, kitchen (all unfurnished, yet including a new bedroom A/C), covered parking and well beyond hearing distance of the 2023

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?hl=en&mid=1T_PYBTmvwOM5dIMqYN0z9VvcTtw should show area... very rural, and very nice... and not overrun by monkeys (animal version)

Now... on to the Immigration saga 555

So here we go!!!

Yesterday my crazy day with Udon Thani Immigration, after waiting first for 15 minutes for ONE person to clear the 90 day window...

The official chose to talk IN THAI with my partner, for a good SEVEN minutes. It was interesting to see the look of amazement, puzzlement, shock, and speechlessness across his face, since he is, by nature, VERY much in wise, knowing "control" of all issues Thai {USUALLY!}

Then my partner started telling me that he had said would have to have the home-owner (landlord) visit Immigration (even tho we had the original detailed rental agreement AND the landlord's Thai ID photocopied and all signed by her...) THEN... he started using a yellow highlighter on various lines of a Thai/English notice and said "NEW LAW!!!" and handed it to me... THEN...

Getting the shock of a 2000 baht fine (due to apparently having ignored the "notify police within 24 hours of any move "law"

THIS regardless of my explaining that it was a NEW address (new home) and it took TWO WEEKS and 8 self-mailed registered and unregistered letters to be mailed (SHOWED HIM THOSE LETTERS!), AND a trip to discuss the non-delivery issue with the sorting office at the MAIN UDON THANI Post Office, before we could consider the address correct and established, and Thai Postal could manage to deliver my mail (mailed from the Phan Don Post Office, 1km away, after the pstal manager THERE had assured me ALL was FINE with the address...) but that's another topic, huh!

Got told we needed to go into WAITING mode now, for 30 minutes... ????

My partner also told me that we could have done the change of address at Bangkok Immigration sans penalty, ie free... all so strange...

Had an amazing long verbal argument with my partner OUTSIDE Immigration, during the walking trip to the ATM to withdraw the money for the fine that THAT TIME would NOT be a good time to stop and eat lunch (as he wished, hey, he was hungry! 555), since the Immigration office would be CLOSING DOWN FOR LUNCH 20 minutes from then... SO surprising, since he's USUALLY a super-smart guy... but he kept insisted that Immigration wouldn't really be CLOSING for an hour, 12 to 1pm !!!! SO surprising, considering the closed period was posted on the main entrance door AND he'd witnessed the MAIN IMMIGRATION office in Bangkok, doing JUST THAT, so many times, lol... stubborn guy to the end, yet I DO get the cultural point where food trumps ALL other issues, lol.

LUNCH IDEA OVERRULED & POSTPONED 555

Back inside, after the official-imposed 30 minute [penalty-box] waiting period had concluded, I mentioned in conversation with the official (as an aside, and of course all very politely) that this shock-2000 baht-penalty-24-hour-notifiy-police {enforced???!!!} "law" had been "an expensive 'lesson'..." and THEN he told me that he would reduce the fine to 1000 baht, which, as we all know and have experienced... experienced really mixed {to put it mildly} inner emotions and feelings, but outwardly just expressed polite gratitude and subservience... {I'm getting a stress headache just remembering this drama...}

BUT... bottom line, 1000 Baht later, we managed to square away my change of address, AND managed to create a new 90 day certificate in the process... very stressful... but successful, and actually achieved in a little over ONE hour, at Immigration there.{although it really felt like THREE hours, lol}

Oh, also, my partner was informed that on the next 90 day notice, if he came alone (as he always did at the Major Hollywood Suksawat Immigration office) there would be a 200 baht "fee" (???) where as that had always been free in BBK, but if I came with him... it would be "free"...

Never a dull moment, here, when mixing it up with Thai officialdom....

Thanks again for everyone's welcomes, and helping advice...

Pawpcorn

They are very inventive with creating income.

200 Baht if he comes alone without you.

Can not remember having hear that before?

90 day report can usually be done by a delegate/proxy.

Why bother?

Don't they do it by postal mail?

Try online report.

1000 Baht without receipt of course whistling.gif

of course! I'm thinking a receipt would have cost 1000 Baht extra!!! 555555555555555555555555555

And YES, I thought the 200 Baht fee for not having to see me was quite inventive and perhaps thought up, on the spot! Guess he'll have to see me in person...rolleyes.gif

A good income day, for sure! sleep.png

Question... Is it 100% certain that now, living in the UDON THANI province... that I MUST process my Retirement Extension at the Udon Thani Immigration office, as opposed to the CW Bangkok Immigration???

After reading members telling the stories of having to wait 30 days for approval (and my personality of having perhaps a low threshold for anxiety in these affairs) I'm remembering how Bangkok Immigration processed and approved my Retirement Extension SAME DAY as applying...

Being pushed into a 30-day psudo-overstay by this potential 30 day waiting period... or having to advance my 1 year Retirement Extension by ONE MONTH EARLIER (potentially) EVERY YEAR... by having to apply 30 days before the Retirement Extension expires, (in anticipation of the 30-day waiting period members are reporting) just seems wrought with frustration.

It would be worth it to make the 500km drive to Bangkok to be spared the mental anguish.

Or Khon Kaen???

Thanks again for the knowledgeable advice here...

The under consideration stamp allows you to stay until your extension is approved. The 30 days on the stamp is just a date to contact them about the application. It certainly is not an overstay.

You do not have to do your extension early because of the under consideration stamp.

In order to apply for an extension anywhere other than where you are living would require you to register your new address and present proof of that address.

You would have to prove a new address in Bangkok to apply there. You can only apply at the office for where you are living.

90 day report online works. Fantastic success for the last 3 times in a row....4th time is next week (first 3 was on last year's extension, this one is the first reporting on the new extension). Udon Immigration only 2 kilometers from my house, but I save the 10 baht gas money and do it online anyways. I only report in person to renew my annual extension

Really doesn't matter where you are...if you do it online, but good to notify them of your current address (as said above)

Edited by slipperylobster

That's fine if the online report actually works.

It does not for many.
