PM Prayut: NCPO has no plan to cancel public referendum

BANGKOK, 8 June 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has confirmed that the National Council for Peace and Order has never considered canceling the public referendum on the new draft charter.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, who is also the chief of the NCPO, declined on Tuesday to comment on a question about the possibility of the Constitutional Court ruling that a clause in the Public Referendum Act violates the interim charter.

Gen. Prayuth also declined to express an opinion on how to deal with such a verdict should it happen.

However, he said that even under such a scenario, the ruling should not affect the entire law while adding that neither the government nor the NCPO has any intention of canceling the process or the draft Constitution.

The PM went on to say that the government has allocated a budget of three billion baht for the public referendum after some reports claimed that the process will need as much as 10 billion baht.

Gen. Prayuth maintained that the government may still be able to provide some additional budget if asked for.

Again the agenda is there for all to see.

My way or the..........

No need to 'cancel' the referendum - if he wants to prevent it happening, he only needs to make sure that the Constitutional Court rules it to be illegal.

Seeking legal opinion before messing with a constitution seems to be the last thing on politicians and non politicians minds in Thailand , now you go down the same path as Thaksin and at every turn it will be challenged, the last review by Thaksin resulted in the academic's challenging every line, the end result was Thaksin closed public comment, a mish mash was the end result, beside land deals , shares deals , unaccounted company wealth since taking office , paying no tax on 1 billion dollar sale, numerous other shenanigans along with a shonky constitution a combination that finally lead to the 06 coup, nothing has been learned, nothing gained.......................coffee1.gif

Does anybody understand this? It has me completely floored.

Wow!

NNT has outdone themselves with their misinformation this time.

The must have finally read junta-head's mind.

"Chainarong" thinks Thaksin was a naughty boy.

But he will cancel the result if all his subordinate servants vote the wrong way.

I just don't know why they keep saying, the ncpo and the government will. ...

Prayut is head of both.

They are one and the same.

that the government may still be able to provide some additional budget if asked for

For Prayut cash is just another 20-year treasury bond to be cashed.

No point cancelling the referendum - when the outcome is already known.

"There will not be a coup".

If it looks likely that that referendum will fail, then the NCPO/Five Rivers will likely find a face-saving way to postpone the referendum.

"Soothsayers say Mars too close to Thailand for Referendum."

Or maybe something big will happen which will require a detour on the road-map to "Happiness"?

No point cancelling the referendum as the outcome is irrelevant.

If it passes, the Junta will be pleased as it secures the military a permanent dominating position in whatever government follows Prayut for the next 20-30 years.

If it fails, Prayut will personally adjust the draft charter to secure the military a permanent dominating position in whatever government follows Prayut for the next 20-30 years and have the draft passed into law following the 1997 draft charter procedure.

It amazes me that the Thai still think they have a choice in all of this.

The military is here to stay for a very long time. The referendum is irrelevant. Don't know why they are wasting the money.

They have simply passed it to the Constitution Court who will do what they say when they want to.

If they decide they need to cancel it easy. If not the court will do nothing. With this lot i would not mind betting the CC try anulling the referendum after it if the wrong result comes out.

Has no plan. Yet

Has not considered ('as a formal process' is the get-out here). Yet.

When Prayuth figures out that he's going to lose, see how quickly he'll get a plan, which will turn out to be fully hatched and waiting. See how fast the NCPO will consider a fall-back.

That's if you believe him to start with. Personally, if he shook my hand, I'd count my fingers afterwards. This guy lies in his teeth as an option of first resort, He's Thai and he's a soldier with more in his bank than he can account for. QED

IMO, this referendum will not eventuate.......the general intends to be in power a lot longer than has been stated....

Amazing. Like nobody in Thailand suspects the police are on the take or are owners of criminal business.

If Prayuth seriously wanted credibility, he'd take the lid off the police and the army instead of lying his head off about both being honest.

I think we can expect it to be cancelled now.
