Certifying passport copies by US embassy !

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

How much does the embassy charge for certifying copies of your passport as true copies? and other documents? And what's the process? Do we need to book online notarial appointment? I am in need to certify copies of passport and US birth certificate of my child as true copies

All notary services cost $50.

They will do certified copies but not true certified copies. Info here. http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/notarial-services.html

You will need to make an appointment.

Thanks ubonjoe, so it means for certifying each copy I'll need to shell out $50 . Real daylight robbery IMO

One more question, do they copy the originals by themselves and certify them? Or we copy them ourselves and give them to certify?

The will do the copies.

Are you sure you need this? If for use in Thailand the standard procedure is just that you sign the copy.

I need my child to enter in yellow book. The district office told me to translate the passport in thai and have the copy and translation certified by us embassy and ministry of foreign affairs, then only they will entertain my request. The kid was born in the US. I am a thai PR holder btw.

OK expect the procedure provided by Ubonjoe will take care of it - MFA will have an Embassy Consular Official signature to check against there data base and can then provide the legal Thai translated version stamp for local office to accept. All such service is $50 or local baht at near current rate of exchange. You do need to make the appointment application on-line but quite easy and slots available most days - you can arrive a bit early or late AFAIK - slots are just to limit the number each day to avoid long queues on any specific day.

Thanks Lop and ubonjoe

I thought that notarial services are limited to certain morning hours. They were back in March when I had my yearly affidavit of income notarized

You would have to arrive during working hours for your appointment type.

Hello...it's pretty simple...you need to make an appt on the website, and arrive with your copies in hand...the fee is about 1200 per stamp...so it is actually quite expensive considering the service is usually free in the usa...the whole thing takes about 30 minutes from arrival...

For a "certified true copy" of a U.S. passport at the US Embassy in Bangkok, must I bring my own photocopy of my passport or will the US Embassy make it?  Some (like ubonjoe) say, they will make the copy for me; some (like hdkane) say I must bring my own. What's the deal?

They might do the copy but I suggest you take a copy with you in case they don't.

You bring your own, but like on my last visit, they wanted more space for a stamp, so they made a new copy. Doesn't hurt to bring one, and they usually want you to be prepared with all documents when you arrive, so bring a copy.

When I did this last year for my son the consulate made copies, then I took the documents to a translation company at Mahatun Plaza (Phloen Chit BTS) and they did the translation and took care of the MFA certification for 1500 baht.

Thanks, guys
