BANGKOK: -- The Appeals Court commuted the one year imprisonment handed down on a punk musician to a two-year suspension of the jail sentence after his plea for lighter sentence was reasonable.

The musician, Nattapol Khem-ngern, aka Jayjay, was arrested and convicted by the Criminal Court to two years in prison for spray-painting letter “A” which looked like an anarchist symbol on the court’s name plate in May last year in Bangkok.

But the sentence was halved to one year when he pleaded guilty and sought sympathy citing that he had to take care of his parents.

He was charged for destroying public property and violating the Public Cleanliness Act.

At today’s hearing of his appeal to Appeals Court, it agreed to commute his one year jail sentence to two-year probation with reasons that it was his first time offence, has faithful job, and has to take care if his parents.

But the court imposed him.a 9,000 baht fine instead.

However since he pleaded guilty, the fine was halved to 4,500 baht, and the jail sentence was suspended for two years.

During the probation period, he is required to report to beviour control officials and do social work for 12 hours.

During the trial in May last year, Nattapol told the court that the soldier was arrested and now was on trial at the military court which he said until today there was no progress. But he said that he sprayed the symbol with no political motive, claiming that it is only a symbol of a foreign musical band.

I have take care of my parents as a way of defence. Truly amazing! Although prison for this offence is a bit strong. How about him cleaning up all the Graffiti on Sukhumvit. That will keep him busy for a few weeks.

...he is required to report to behaviour control officials...

I wonder what they put in the tea these days.

"...and violating the Public Cleanliness Act."

...maybe they will even end up paying him in the end.....???

....now let's compare this to the sentences handed out to foreigners charged with similar offenses....

Send him to Singapore with a can of spray paint.

We need more "anarchists" in Thailand.
