Supreme Court sentences two former TRT politicians to six years in prison for corruption

TRT-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Two former MPs of the defunct Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party led by fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra were each sentenced to six years in prison yesterday after they were found guilty of corruption by the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders.

Former Agriculture Minister Chucheep Hansawat, 72, and his secretary Witthaya Thienthong, 75, were convicted by the Supreme Court for corruption in a case in 2001 which they were indicted by the Office of the Attorney-General only in March last year for abuse of authority under Section 157 of the Criminal Code and price collusion in connection with a scheme by the Department of Agricultural Extension to supply about 130,000 tonnes of fertilizer worth 367 million baht to farmers from February 2001-September 2002.

The fertilizers were meant for distribution to poor farmers across the country affected by floodings.

But farmers complained of poor quality of fertilizers as they found the supply was a mixture of muddy soil and burnt sugarcane bagasse, lacking essential nutrients and minerals for plants.

But both denied the charges and were released on bail.

Chucheep was former MP of the TRT party in Pathum Thani, while Witthaya was former MP in Srakaew province.

Both Hansawat and Thienthong families have long been in control of politics in their provinces for decades

The National Anti Corruption Committee (NACC) conducted investigation into the fertilizer procurement scheme and ruled in July 2012 that both had committed malfeasance and violated the anti-price collusion law.

The NACC later submitted the finding to the OAG to pursue court case against them.

After the verdicts were read, both were escorted to serve their jail sentence at the Bangkok Remand Prison amid tears from their families.

hope this opens the flood gate,to put more corrupt officials

behind bars, once they see they are going to be give custodial

sentences,it might curb corruption

I am not sure this will solve much corruption, a lot of corruption has happened in the last fifteen years , the death penalty in China never seemed to slow the fruits down, and corruption is still prevalent. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,coffee1.gif

Yes - I'm all for bent politicians, civil servants and Filth being imprisoned, but I also want to see some of the present lot's backers inside.

Otherwise it's simply Thai business as usual.

U wont pin the tail on the donkey with the latest contestants sharecropper , not just yet anyway.

the trt side had more than 15 years of opportunity to commit their corrupt activities.

The crimes of those trt members were committed 15 years ago - 14 years of protection by their side.

The other side is in charge only since last year. Which means that nearly all of the corruption belongs to the trt taksin side

So what is your Point?

Good news

Very amazing to see thaksinism regime had cheat farmers since long years...

Not so amazing, they are crooks and just use the farmers. The rice program was a good example.

15 years of stalling it when they were in power and now finally a verdict. I think those corrupt guys wished they had served their time before and not now that they are so old. I just hope that when the PTP gets in power they won't get pardoned. They like pardoning criminals.

Damm shame that justice goes so slow here. (for whatever side)

You can't possibly be serious.

"So what is your Point?"

My "Point" is that corruption has continued unabated since forever. However, we now have a junta in charge that took power promising to fight corruption. The conviction of the two TRT politicians notwithstanding that does not seem to be the case. Instead, the "fight against corruption" seems to be used as a political tool and for the purpose of window dressing.

Well, it seems worse than that...

According to the article, the wrongdoing occurred in 2001-2002, but they weren't actually indicted until last year, 2015, and then convicted in 2016. That, from indictment to conviction, is amazingly quick for Thailand in a VIPs case.

But one kind of wants to ask, what exactly were the authorities, prosecutors, etc. doing for the 15 or so years before 2015. I'm kind of thinking it wasn't a situation where the authorities only found out about this scam in 2012 when the NACC finally reached a resolution.

A hard government, very strict, showing no pity for any of it previous foes. Shame?

What use is it putting to old men, grandfathers in jail? How's that improve the country? Another revenge ruling.

I know there are also a few democrat mps that have been jailed this year for corruption so I guess this is to balance the scales. But it makes you feel sick to read how they hand out jail sentences for a little fiddling on the side.

It's like a white pair of shoes. No matter how much you try to keep them spotlessly clean in the end you wish you'd never bought them cause it's too much trouble.

That's a very naive view.

You are suggesting no military corruption, no corruption among the ranks of democrat politicians like Suthep, no corruption amongst the elite families like the CP, Red bull, brewery families etc. in the last 15 years? Really?

You don't have to be part of the group in power to be corrupt. Don't let you political leanings blind you to reality!

I seen him support the PTP often and the fact that he condones corruption pretty much shows what party he likes. Its that simple, all those people condoning corruption and calling it revenge and so on and so bah.gif

The guys enriched them selves at the expense of poor farmers and got caught.. then stalled until they could not stall anymore and now have to face the punishment.

I don't care what side they're from, what color shirt they wear or whose arse they kiss. Corrupt politicians and civil servants should be jailed.

This constant but, but, but is boring. Do them all and get the bloody court procedures speed up. These 2 probably thought they were safe as long as a Shin government was in power to protect them.

No argument from me.

Again, no argument.

They WERE safe under the various Shin administrations, just as the likes of Suthep are perfectly safe under this junta.

It took 15 years to get these men in jail, but you expect the current criminals to be jailed immediately? Isn't that a tad unrealistic?

Wait your turn.
