Deputy PM says referendum location up to EC discretion

BANGKOK, 14 June 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has allayed concerns over the Election Commission's (EC) decision to host the referendum on the draft charter at a military base.

The Deputy Prime Minister said it is within commission’s authority to decide where the referendum will be held. According to the news, the military base was chosen by the EC out of safety concerns, as there will also be politicians coming to vote on the draft charter.

Some politicians have called on the EC to use a school campus to organize the event instead of an army camp. Dr. Wissanu said it is up to the EC where it should be held.

When asked whether the United front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD)’s anti-cheating center could later lead to more problems, the Deputy Prime Minister said the Public Referendum Act does not prohibit the group from setting up the center. However, Dr. Wissanu affirmed that it is the duty of security forces to ensure national security.

Military bases safe for recruits....No. Why would ordinary people feel safe there?

Dothe public feel free of intimidation with armed military milling around? No. How will this improve the public's confidence in a fair vote?

Is the military transparent in how they conduct their business? No. Why would the public believe that counting of ballots would be impartial?

Public spaces safe when the military leaves the barracks, which they would do if polling spaces were elsewhere....No.

The bottom line is, the military has never learned its proper role in society. They are delusional thugs.
