Survey reveals interest in gambling prevalent among students

BANGKOK, 14 June 2016 (NNT) - The Center for Gambling Studies has conducted a survey of students from 10 provinces, discovering that over 45% have expressed interest in gambling during the Euro 2016, staking as much as 5,000 baht.

Director of the Center for Gambling Studies under Chulalongkorn University Nualnoi Treerat delivered the report along with related agencies on the behavior of football fans during the 2016 UEFA European Championship or Euro 2016. The group surveyed over 3,800 high school and vocational students in 10 provinces.

The study revealed that 67.7% of respondents believe that gambling is not based on pure luck and requires analytical skill. An estimated 45.7% of students who do gamble said they will bet on their favorite teams, while almost 60% were not aware of current anti-gambling campaigns.

Betting limits range from 500 to 5,000 baht. Gamblers use websites, the sports section of newspapers, and television coverage.

The Center has advised parents and all social sectors to monitor and dissuade children from gambling, while encouraging authorities to enforce gambling laws consistently, not only during major events.

Enforce gambling law as consistently!

Ok so I can't have a bet on Euro so I'm good to buy 20,000 baht worth of lottery tickets to win a million?

Is that within the law?

10/1 on Democracy, 100/1 on Junta. ............................cheesy.gif

only students? almost every Thai is interested in gambling

Nothing is doomed to fail more spectacularly than adults telling kids not to do something. When Portugal stopped criminalising drugs. Youth uptake plummeted. Good heavens, just fancy that!.

Interest in what's forbidden is common, human nature. Especially among repressed new generations. If this is a surprise to Thai masters of the country, they are utter ignorant fools.

If only they are as diligent in analysing during their studies as in placing bets...

From what I've see it goes well beyond ' expressing an interest ' and it's not just the Euro Championship.

I wonder if the Justice Minister will produce another totally useless, unenforceable law as he did with alcohol near schools.
