UBON RATCHATHANI: -- Drugs suppression authorities acting on complaints by villagers raided a temple in Ubon Tuesday and found two stoned monks.

They were both tested for amphetamines and the results came back positive. They were defrocked and then detained by police reported Thairath.

Villagers had got fed up with the behavior of Samai Buaphan, 45, and a novice Suradej Permphan, 17, at the temple in the village of Ban Chokchai, in the Khemarat district of the north eastern province. Samai had been a monk for 5 years while the novice had been in robes just a month after ordaining when there was a death in the family.

Warnings from the abbot, relatives and villagers had failed to change the pair's behavior so the drug squad was alerted.

A search of the monks quarters found no drugs but two empty bottles of booze were discovered. Their urine tests came back with the tell tale purple colour. They said that they had bought Ya Ba from teenagers selling them behind the temple for 150-200 baht a time and took two a day. They had been taking drugs for a long time.

After being defrocked at the district officer they were handed over to police for prosecution.

As I understand it from conversations with my wife and wife's family

Going in the temple as a monk, is a cultural thing in Thailand, many people go in for a variety of reasons, ranging from a sincere desire to study Buddhism, to not having other options and everything in between.

Some times people go in to escape problems they had in life, but not all are sucsesful.

There are two types, those who go in for a short time, and those who devote their life to it

The people entering are from the general population, so there is no surprise to anyone that some of the problems prevalent in the general populations would also find their way among some Buddhist monks , but more so among those who go in for a short time.

No Thai I know is surprised by this, I believe they would be more surprised if it did not happen more offten.

Only farangs with a western notion of a Christian monastery are surprised and shocked by these events.

Not an expert on the subject, and my understanding could stand some correction.

Every Thai male should at least have spent some time in a temple. But there're various reasons why you see little boys entering the monk-hood.

Some families just don't have enough money for their kids and sending them to a temple is an honorable solution. And more food for the family.

Not sure what the kids are thinking about it. Some become monks after they committed a crime.

Many years ago (about 1971) I was hitch-hiking / bussing down through Thailand, and I was somewhere around Ranong, waiting for a lift or bus, whichever came first. A couple of novices walked past, and stopped to chat (no common language, as I spoke no Thai, but you get by in those situations), and then an hour or so later, passed again on their way back to the wat. I was still there, and it was getting to be late afternoon.

They chatted some more, and then they invited me back to the wat, suggesting I stayed there overnight and carried on with my travels the next morning; an offer I gratefully accepted.

So we went back to the wat and I was introduced to the abbot, who welcomed me and approved my staying there, and the two lads went off for prayers.

A couple of hours later (it was dark by then), the two novices returned to the quarters I'd been given for the night, and gestured to me to follow them. We headed into the jungle, walking for maybe fifteen minutes along a narrow path until we came to a clearing by a small but fast-flowing stream, where the full moon was shining down, illuminating the immediate area. One of the lads then went to a nearby tree and fished out from under it a bamboo bong and a stash of ganja, which he rapidly prepared.

In those days, they always mixed in a little bit of the local tobacco (I seem to remember it had a red star on the pack), and would also use a piece of broken glass to scrape some shavings from a small branch (I never discovered from which tree) into the mix. I think it was supposed to give a smoother smoke, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, the ganja was first class (as was all the ganja in Thailand back then), and we all got completely whacked (in the nicest possible way!).

I'll never forget that night, squatting there in the jungle clearing, with the clear stream rushing by my feet, the two guys in saffron robes squatting next to me and the full moon overhead throwing everything into stark relief; the bong being solemnly passed around, refilled and passed around again.

It was utterly surreal, and the image is indelibly imprinted on my memory.

Yes, I know that they were supposed to eschew smoking and drinking etc while they were monks, but they were short-timers. I think three months was the accepted minimum back then. So they just snuck out when they wanted a smoke.

Thailand was a magical country back then. I still love the place, but it has lost a lot over the years.

It's a sad indictment of Thailand that they're doing methamphetamine now. Had they maintained their tolerance of ganja like it was in the 70s, they wouldn't have any of this crap yaabaa screwing up kids' lives. Kids would still be doing what they did back then, smoking bongs and doing no harm to themselves or anyone else.
