TAT positive tourism revenue to reach 2.41 trillion baht goal

BANGKOK, 16 June 2016 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is positive that revenue from tourism in 2016 will reach the 2.41 trillion baht goal due to a continuous growth recorded during the first half of this year, says TAT chief.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn has revealed the TAT is certain that revenue from tourism in 2016 will reach threshold of 2.41 trillion baht, a figure targeted by authorities, due to a good performance during the first half of this year.

Revenue generated during the first half of 2016 is at 1.24 trillion baht from 16.67 million international visitors to Thailand, which is 13 percent higher than last year. The number of visitors has continued on an ascending trend from the first quarter, especially in tourists from China, Europe, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

On domestic travels, 75 million trips has been made by Thai during in the first half of this year, which higher than last year's figures by 4 percent, resulting in a revenue of 416 billion. Bangkok remains the most popular destination with 18 million visits, followed by the Central region with 16 million visits, and the Northeastern region with 13 million visits.

The TAT governor then revealed the forecast of tourism activity during the third quarter of 2016, that the Kingdom may reach a revenue of 635 billion baht, 14 percent higher than last year's achievement.

Up to 8.3 million visits from international tourists is expected during the third quarter, amounting to a 423 billion baht revenue. Although the high season of tourism has ended, the Kingdom's general public are expected to travel domestically at 36 million domestic trips, a 4% growth year on year. Domestic tourism revenues could be as high as 2.12 billion baht, a 6% growth year on year.

"On domestic travels, 75 million trips has been made by Thai during in the first half of this year, which higher than last year's figures by 4 percent, resulting in a revenue of 416 billion."

Is this normal? Internal tourism counted as earnings? Surely if Thais are earning money in Thailand, then what they spend flitting around the country is not earnings in the same way as Europeans earning money in Europe and spending in Thailand. Yes?

This is not trivial, it amounts to nearly half a trillion baht which might be falsely claimed as tourism revenue, and which would make a mockery of the Tourism Ministers tourism revenue claims, which have been consistently met on TV with considerable scepticism.

Does anyone out there know if this is normal practice outside of Thailand? Or even if the Thailand figures for previous years have included internal tourism spending as revenue or if a recent change has been made for the purpose of creating a favourable tourism image where none actually exists?

Serious questions, sorry I don't know the answers, perhaps someone else on TV does...

Winnie.

You just can't make it up!

Actually, that's what they have just done...

There's Lies, Damned Lies and Thai Statistics .

Amazing TAT, you just cant beat their figures,

Come on, TAT, don't be so modest: you know that in reality Thai tourism revenue for this year is set to reach 999 trillion-gazillion - and then on into infinity. Stop being so humble!

Plus they'll have the facts and figures to prove it.

Trust us, we're not just Thai we're TAT ! rolleyes.gifgigglem.gif

Somchai and 12 relatives in the back of a pickup going on a day trip to Bangsaen. Noodles on the way, food on the beach, bottle of Blend 285 and a few bottles of Coke from the 7-Eleven, another food stop on the way back.

That's a few thousand baht for TAT to use in their stats.

TAT goals are ALWAYS met.

Why dont TAT sell VR (virtual Reality) headsets for say $2000 each. Then they wouldnt have to bother with damn tourists coming but would have their money anyway?

TAT goals are ALWAYS met.

Wrong.....they are always exceeded.

Time to stock up on more prawns!

Yes, and we will find out by November 2016 the situation for the whole of 2016.

I would say the Thai tourism authorities love to mix the international and domestic numbers together. Perhaps because the domestic numbers are so "open to interpretation".

Clearly the economic benefits are not the same on a whole country basis. One is an injection of money, the other is circulation.

If BS was dynamite....TAT would blow this place apart with their false figures

The TAT is a bit like Corn Hair Don, in that they will say, or do anything, to make a point, or a claim. There is no ethics, no morality, no compunction to express anything even resembling the truth. Of course these numbers are made up. Or course they are a lie. Or course they cannot be believed. They are simply trying to invent a bright spot within a sagging economy. Sure, the Chinese numbers are up. But, we all know the Western numbers are way down. And you cannot count every visa run, every business trip, every Thai who hits the road, and every other factor, and still be expected to have a single shred of credibility, at the end of the day!
