The 55 members of the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) said they would willingly go to jail if the gathering of thumbprints for the party’s Royal petition was found to have violated serious laws. “Fifty-five politicians had submitted a petition to the king. If it is considered as a criminal and serious matter as we just fulfill our work, we are willing to walk into jail – one or two years is fine,” party spokesman Yem Ponhearith told reporters and supporters outside party headquarters yesterday after irregularities were reportedly found in the petition by the Interior Ministry the day before.

The CNRP, which submitted 260,000 thumbprints along with its original petition asking for intervention in the country’s degrading political landscape from King Norodom Sihamoni, is continuing to collect thumbprints for a second petition. Mr. Ponhearith said the CNRP had sent a letter to the king on Tuesday night asking for a meeting to discuss the political situation, but had not received a reply and do not know when they will submit their new petition.

The Ministry of Interior’s working group assigned to review and verify the thumbprints on the original CNRP petition asking King Sihamoni for intervention held its second meeting yesterday. After the meeting, Deputy National Police Chief Kang Sokhorn said the team had found problems with the petition, with many thumbprints looking alike, as well as others bearing no verifiable information.
